'It was completely unnecessary;' De Soto chief reacts to video showing officers beating, kicking man in groin at police station

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Two officers are accused of assaulting a man brought in for booking at a Jefferson County police station and a third officer is accused of deleting photos showing the assault. Video of the alleged beating was obtained only by News 4.

Former De Soto police officers James Daly and Bethany Zarcone were charged in connection with an assault on a man being booking at the Jefferson County police station.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office, officers James Daly, 55, and Bethany Zarcone were on-duty on September 30 when they assaulted a man brought in for booking at the De Soto Police Station. Charging documents say Daly grabbed the man by the hair and throat, pushed him onto a bench and held him down by the neck for a "period of time." Zarcone is accused of hitting the handcuffed man in his groin with her knees.
"It was almost disbelief. There are times when police officers have to use physical force while doing their jobs but in this case, this was a picture," said De Soto Police Chief Jeff McCreary. "It was completely unnecessary. Our procedure is, if someone is being uncooperative during booking, you take the items from them that are necessary to get them in a cell in a safe manner, and then you come back to them later".

Daly reportedly put a mock graveyard on his lawn as a Halloween decoration last year. Images of it began circulating on social media showing several crosses with names on them that are used as grave markers. The wording on one of the crosses says, "Here lies Michael Brown, a fat ghetto clown."

(7,720 posts)Police procedure with a suspect is to frighten him to the point he can't co-operate?
Then interpret that as being non compliant, and then you really go to town on him?
And cop number 3's response . . . oh jees, I better delete this incriminating photo!
So which page of which training manual is this procedure in?
(Do police actually get trained? Or allowed to sleep through that?)

(29,533 posts)It was laced with cruel people, many of whom supported torture (while being physical cowards themselves).
Given the number of ex-military who are now police officers, I would be fascinated to see how much of a corollary there is between people who served in the military under Bush and these monsters in the police force?
I know there has always been police brutality and use of excessive force, but I also remember that it is was during the invasion of Iraq that there were people actively cheering this behavior and essentially laughing at the Geneva conventions.
I know that there are people who are normalizing the Bush administration now, but I am not one of those people. Bush loved Erik Prince, he created Guantanamo, he swaggered around like a bully, and now we - maybe coincidentally, maybe not - have a police force that acts like his military was encouraged to do.
