(3,905 posts)had a high school friend, who did this sort of thing, after graduation. Bragged about it like it was some sort of badge of honor, he and his other friends who participated. I kept looking at him, thinking what the fuck are you trying to prove. He was young at the time, still no excuse. We drifted apart over time, largely over things like that.

(63,221 posts)It seems like the logical thing to do. If people don't like it, they can either leave or get their food to go.

(7,593 posts)If the deduction would bring your pay below $7.25 an hour, such action would be illegal at the federal level. Some states go further, and do not permit an employer from deducting business losses from an employee's paycheck. California is one such state, and this incident happened in San Francisco.

(25,355 posts)for a celebration dinner several decades ago when we were very young. No credit cards and for some reason did not have checkbooks with us. We planned on paying cash.
The dinner bill was higher than we had expected and did not have enough cash on us. So while he nursed a drink at our table, I went to the ladies room and then slipped out the door. Drove home and picked up some cash we kept on hand and rushed back to the restaurant. We paid and left, laughing from nervousness and embarrassment at being so naive about what a really good restaurant cost. Yes, with the added cash, there was enough to tip the waitress.
Never would have occurred to us to try to slip out without paying.

(71,399 posts)... the cops got there. The other option was to pay $35.00 (in '73- a lot of money) for the missing check. I was still buff - I'd gotten out of the Navy about six weeks before.

(28,094 posts)Walking the check was fairly commonplace and we were responsible for the entire amount if we were the server. One guy I knew kept a steel bar in his jacket and would run after these miscreants and believe me , they paid. Now of course, hed be in jail. The good old days, right? 😄
