WASHINGTON The Capitol Police had clearer advance warnings about the Jan. 6 attack than were previously known, including the potential for violence in which Congress itself is the target. But officers were instructed by their leaders not to use their most aggressive tactics to hold off the mob, according to a scathing new report by the agencys internal investigator.
In a 104-page document, the inspector general, Michael A. Bolton, criticized the way the Capitol Police prepared for and responded to the mob violence on Jan. 6. The report was reviewed by The New York Times and will be the subject of a Capitol Hill hearing on Thursday.
Mr. Bolton found that the agencys leaders failed to adequately prepare despite explicit warnings that pro-Trump extremists posed a threat to law enforcement and civilians and that the police used defective protective equipment. He also found that the leaders ordered their Civil Disturbance Unit to refrain from using its most powerful crowd-control tools like stun grenades to put down the onslaught.
The report offers the most devastating account to date of the lapses and miscalculations around the most violent attack on the Capitol in two centuries.

(55,143 posts)They were unprepared for an insurrection, and restrained by superiors, and not granted help from other agencies in a timely manner.
Those are the only conclusions I can fathom based on what I've read.

(5,913 posts)Mitch McConnell is also to blame, the Capitol police are governed by two sargent at arms and the Capitol architect. The two sargents are appointed by Speaker of the House and The Senate Majority Leader, one each. The Capitol architect is appointed by the President.

I despise trump, but not making sure Capitol security was beefed up is tough to blame on him. Of coarse, theres all kinds of other crud thats his fault.
trump inspired insurrection, but he was not responsible for CP failure to stop the rubes at the bottom of Capitol steps.

Michael Bolton: Yeah, well at least your name isn't Michael Bolton.
Samir: You know, there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it. Until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning grammys.
Samir: Well, if it bothers you that much, why don't you just go by Mike; instead of Michael?
Michael Bolton: No way. Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.
