The House Committee on Oversight and Reform will vote Wednesday on legislation to make D.C. the 51st state, a once-fringe idea that has become a key part of the Democratic platform.
With Democrats in the majority on the committee, and with full-throated support from committee chair Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.), the Washington, D.C. Admission Act is expected to easily advance, teeing up its second passage in the House since last year.
Congress can no longer exclude D.C. residents from the democratic process, forcing residents to watch from the sidelines as Congress votes on laws that affect the nation or votes even on the laws of the duly elected D.C. government, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) said in prepared opening remarks. Democracy requires much more.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) announced last week that the full House would vote on the statehood bill the week of April 19.
