House committee will hold historic vote on bill to study slavery reparations

Savannah Behrmann
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON –A bill to create a commission to study potential reparations for Black Americans faces a historic vote Wednesday.

The legislation, HR 40, was first introduced 30 years ago. If passed, the commission would examine slavery, its lingering effects, discrimination and what remedies to take.

The legislation, or the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, is being sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas.

In a statement, Jackson Lee said the expected vote in the Judiciary Committee is "long overdue." For more than two decades before her, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., introduced it year-after-year without success.
