GOP senator warns of 'dangerous' move toward recyclable lunch trays

By Josh Israel -April 14, 2021 11:56 AM

John Barrasso is apparently very worried that Biden's infrastructure plan might help protect the planet.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) warned on Tuesday that President Joe Biden's $2.25 trillion American Jobs Plan contains a "dangerous" and "scary" provision to make schools greener. And, he warned, this might result in more recyclable lunch trays.

Appearing on Fox Business, Barrasso — who as chair of the Senate Republican Conference is the third highest-ranking GOP senator — explained that he does not like the infrastructure package and argued that climate-related infrastructure doesn't really count as infrastructure.

"One of the things that has really struck me, is they have $100 billion in this for a green school initiative," he complained, "and you dig into it and say so what are they going to do for $100 billion dollars?”

Although now that I think about it, they might have served as a weapon in the right circumstances.

and were definitely reused. I've heard they made great sleds (it was too flat where I grew up to use them).

Come to think of it, the last time I was in a cafeteria-style eating place - in 2019 I think - they were using reusable trays.

Not much for the landfill besides milk cartons. All the food waste was scraped into big trash cans, which the local pig farmer collected daily. Now that’s Green.

1. He's never seen the inside of a school cafeteria.

2. He could care less what kids eat. He's still butt hurt we fund school lunch programs.

3. He's horrified that infrastructure includes climate related issues, too, like reducing landfill waste with recyclable paper.

If McDonald's can get rid of the styrofoam clamshell for the big mac without a societal melt down, schools can shift to non styrofoam single use trays.

Investing in conservation and renewables to save money in the long run is a conservative strategy. Short term outrage and emotional spending decisions is, well, not very fiscally conservative or repsonsible.

Being an orthopedic surgeon, were he at home exercising the same level of thought that he gives to legislating half the state would be on crutches or in wheelchairs.
