so should cops. Teacher, almost always, need a Masters to get a promotion, so should cops. Teachers need to make as much as cops too. Seems teachers need to buy there own supplies, so should cops. If POAs are exempt from Right to Work Laws, so should teacher unions.
Cops have a hard time writing reports, teacher don't.

(47,410 posts)I think too many police got their training from watching cop shows on television.
There is an attitude I've seen in cops I've known, even my own brother years ago. They start to see everyone as criminals and they look for crimes where they often don't exist. I remember my brother's wife saying, he'd come home in interrogation mode and question her and the kids like they were suspects. Fortunately, he didn't stay in that occupation a long time. It really brought out the worst in him.

Maybe we should start weeding out the ultra right wing white supremacists from becoming cops.

(36,025 posts)such interviews. Scientists? Psychologists? Intelligence professionals? A Florida truth commission?
How does an annual interview go that's about "account for your academic freedom of speech" and how do they know they're being truthful about their political bias -- personality test, lie detector test, sodium pentathol, social media search, what.
It's an inquisition, because it can't be a truth interview.

All states have state teacher certification.
If alternative certification is the wave of the future, then this country's democratic IQ is doomed.

(36,025 posts)Yes, cops should have college degrees. Chicago requires two year associates' degrees, generally earned at community or 4-year colleges, just to get hired.

U.S. Military does 8 weeks minimum then possibly another 4+ then are issued weapons.
They do not seem to have any of the same problems.
Maybe it is the person and type of training, not the length.

This escalation of diplomaitis then locks out millions of Americans from good paying job. There are Power Companies paying 31/hr for their call center help, but they want an Associates Degree. For a dam call center.
Create a better Middle School and High Scholl education system. Teach Civics and American Political responsibilities.

(866 posts)Say, if lawyers need a degree then police do or say if accountants need an advanced degree then police do, if nurses need degrees then police do. Im making this point because teachers are getting hit so hard. Teachers need a Masters plus a certification. Saying, if teachers need a college degree, suggests that their jobs can be done without them.

(58,785 posts)when applying, and for any advancement. Many applicants, for competitive departments in cities anyway, have four-year degrees.
Regarding higher education, the feeling has always been that police should reflect the community, ideally be from the community. When college was uncommon, it was uncommon in patrol cops. Nowadays, of course, education beyond high school is normal, so of course it's become normal for those entering the field.
