A teacher and basketball coach at a North Carolina school was killed in a shooting after trying to rob the home of an Mexican drug cartel member, authorities said Wednesday. Barney Dale Harris and his brother-in-law, Steven Alexander Stewart Jr., were accused of robbing an alleged "stash house" last Thursday belonging to a member of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organizations, Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson said at a news conference.
Investigators determined Harris and Stewart broke into the mobile home of Alonso Beltra Lara and waited for him to come back, according to the sheriff. When the man returned home, a shooting broke out that resulted in the deaths of Harris and Lara. Deputies responded around 1 a.m. to multiple calls of gunfire at the residence in the 1000 block of Wyatt Road in Green Level, about 30 miles northwest of Greensboro, according to the sheriff's office. Officers found Harris, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and Lara, who was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.
"It was almost like an old Western shootout," Johnson said. No other injuries were reported, but three trailers were also struck by bullets. Harris, wearing a bulletproof vest, gloves and a mask, was shot multiple times, according to the sheriff. Lara, whose hands and feet were bound, was shot twice in the back of the head. During the investigation, deputies seized five firearms, around $7,000 in cash and 1.2 kilograms of cocaine, authorities said. Let me say this. Many, many times you dont really know a person, Johnson told local television station ABC 11. And this is probably one of those examples.
Harris, 40, taught Spanish and coached basketball and track at the Union Academy Charter School in Monroe, the school's website said, according to the NBC affiliate WRAL. "The UA community is mourning the unexpected loss of teacher and coach Barney Harris, the school said on Facebook on Saturday ..."

(2,533 posts)And the Cartel member "victim" had his hands & feet tied.
So they tied him up & then the shooting started. Cuz a tied person is not doing the shooting-I doubt he was alive having just been fed 2 rounds in the back of the head.
Glad they are removed from society is all I can say.

(17,862 posts)who was involved in a murder (admittedly a sleazy drug runner but still).
I wonder if Stewart will ride the lightning.
I am thinking about the scene in The Dark Knight where the bank manager comes out with a shotgun and asks the crooks do they know who they are robbing. I don't think a long term strategy was thought out. Harris might be the lucky one.

As of Thursday, the Facebook post has since been removed, and his name no longer appeared on the school's website

(101,311 posts)and they thought it was something to "mourn" and mark as an "unexpected loss"? I'm struggling to think what the police could possibly have told the school that they didn't have a clue he was one of several bad guys involved. Any detail beyond "he's dead" should have given them pause.

Ive been in law enforcement 50 years. And Ive not seen anything like what Ive seen in the last two years, he said. ...Its become a problem of epidemic proportions here in North Carolina. And wed better get a handle on it.
One indication of the problem: Since Feb. 14, authorities in Alamance County have seized 129 kilos of cocaine and about $2.3 million in cash from drug cartel members and their associates, Johnson said.
Johnson estimates that law enforcement officers are not getting but 1% of the drugs coming into this area.
