But why not ramp up the penalties for firearms offenses?
The VAST majority of gun murders involve a person with a violent rap sheet with GUN crimes on it.
Why is Felon in possession of a firearm NOT an automatic 10 year sentence?
Remove as many people from society as possible that use guns to terrorize communities, right?
Gun control and bans are not likely to happen.
Make guns sooooo risky to even own that people just don't.
EXAMPLE: the guy who killed the New Mexico HP officer with the AR15 recently

(9,895 posts)Open carry by ALL minorities, especially the 'scary' ones to LEOs (i.e. - non-white males).
Return to the days of images of the Black Panthers, armed with shotguns and rifles and defiantly marching, and you'll see a deluge of racist gun control measures immediately - like TODAY, before dinner.

(25,471 posts)This is and has always been all about the gun owners. They're not going to support anything that restricts their ownership, even if it means that others have access to them.
Everyone can already open carry in states where it's legal and there's been zero pushback by the gun nuts in terms of restrictions.

(17,003 posts)to not use guns is to make possession of an unregistered firearm an automatic 20 year sentence. No more waiting for someone to do something bad or stupid with it. I think of it as a preventative.

(14,853 posts)... my neighbor who was murdered a few months ago (during a drug deal away from here) was supposedly shot to death by a guy with previous gun-related violations.
The accused guy was even locked up in the county jail for a few weeks because of the gun charges, then released just days before detectives issued a warrant for his arrest regarding the murder. Then they had to search for him over several weeks, eventually finding him in another state.

And sorry about your neighbor...

(14,853 posts)He moved into this area after the pandemic had started.
I was getting annoyed by all of the noise coming from his place too, after he'd been there about a month. Visitors coming and going constantly as well. None of them were wearing masks.
Never wanted him to die, though!

(74 posts)Drug offenses....
But at it's core, drug running and dealing ARE violent offenses.
Possession... nope.

(11,736 posts)If drugs were legal and regulated, there would likely still be black market activity, but it would decrease. Dealers and smugglers arm themselves to protect their profits from other dealers/smugglers and from law enforcement.
If there were no dealers and smugglers how would possessors be able to possess? Everyone grows and manufactures their own?
