It's a dangerous precedent for the police to shoot someone after they complied with their orders. It doesn't take a genius to infer why.

(4,460 posts)as most policemen I have met over 5 decades are not terribly bright. In fact, I would argue that the reason for a lot of arrests for crimes is that criminals are dumber than the police.
Columbo they are not.

(99,710 posts)If an armed person thinks the police are going to shoot him or her anyway much of their incentive to drop their weapon disappears.

(4,460 posts)things escalate from there, and the police seem to have no grasp of "de-escalation" as a tactic.

(12,436 posts)And she's being VERY cautious about blaming the cop.
She's talking about the "adult who put that gun in the hand of a child"...
I'll probably lean whichever direction she does.

(9,965 posts)that the kid threw the gun over the fence. I don't see that in the video. He turned around and put his hands up. The other guy may have thrown the gun over the fence. Some people just like to blame the victim.

(5,935 posts)COPA (Civilian Office of Police Accountability) has all of the video and some documents posted.

Although this is from a distance, beginning at about 3:40, it appears that Adam Toledo may have tossed something in the direction where the police say a gun was found.
EDITED TO ADD: According to video posted at the link, the other person was in custody far from and before the shooting.
Anything could have happened and I have no confidence in police investigations. I hate to see kids shot by police, especially when their hands are up.

(9,965 posts)he didn't have one when he turned and faced the cop with his hands up. You don't shoot someone who has his hands up. Ever. Especially a kid. My grandfather was a lawman. He would slap that cop right upside his punkin head.

(5,935 posts)Others might point out that the youth may have had a gun visible to the police officer during that chase, and in the dark it was a split-second decision.
Voltaire2
(13,009 posts)There is zero to reasonably discuss about 'split second decisions' or 'may have hads'.
Shot surrendering with empty hands in the air. Those are the facts.

(18,486 posts)The point of telling someone to put their hands up is to get their hands in sight and to make it more difficult for them to shoot accurately if they do still have a weapon in their hand. Once the cop ordered the kid to put up and he complied, the cop had the obligation to reassess the threat. Claiming he thought the kid had a gun in his hand before he ordered him to put up his hands is BS.

(12,047 posts)Then immediately turning to face cop flinging his arms up, in one motion, that last part was caught on camera.
It all happened in a split second, bad move, no cop is gonna wait around to see if your gun hand is empty under those conditions
Better yet, why is no one asking his family what was he doing out at 2:30 am involved in shooting at cars?

(6,477 posts)They weren't shooting at empty cars parked on the street, but at passing motorists.

(12,047 posts)According to a Chicago Police Department alert to officers, Latin Kings members were likely to shoot at unmarked police vehicles.
Chicago police leaders have issued an officer safety alert to cops warning that the departments narcotics unit has learned that factions of the Latin Kings in the Ogden patrol district on the Southwest Side were instructed by ranking members to shoot at unmarked Chicago police vehicles.
The alert, sent out Thursday, said factions of the gang planned to retaliate following the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo at about 2 a.m. March 29 in an alley in the 2400 block of South Sawyer Avenue.

Society is fd up sixteen ways to Sunday but blame the mom.
My 13 year old was smarter than me and outsmarted me once in a while. I was too stupid to be a parent but you dont figure that out until your kids are teenagers and its too late to give them back. So you try to do the best you can against the onslaught of bad culture and dangers that surround them.

Black/brown skin is just assumed to be dangerous and the default is to shoot first, ask questions later.

(12,436 posts)I thought out loud about WHY LEO can't carry polycarbonate shields in the cars.
With Tamir, you exit the car 50' away and approach Tamir behind the shield to order him to comply.

White people are not walking the streets of Little Village after midnight. If it's not the worst neighborhood for gang violence in Chicago it's in the top three
