Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) blasted fellow GOP lawmakers who plan to join the "America First Caucus," saying anyone who becomes a member should lose their committee assignments.
Kinzinger, a vocal critic of former President Trump, tore into the caucus after it was reported that GOP Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.) would lead formation of the group.
The caucus calls for promoting "Anglo-Saxon political traditions," and several House Republicans came out Friday to criticize the group and its policy platform.
"I believe anyone that joins this caucus should have their committees stripped, and the Republican conference should expel them from conference participation," Kinzinger tweeted.

In fact there might've even been a congressional caucus called exactly that back then. I'd have to look it up but I feel I read that somewhere.

(76,951 posts)Kinzinger is a conservative. What he is not is either of fascist or a religiously indoctrinated nutjob.
He voted against impeachment of T---p the first time. He voted against the Biden's stimulus plan because "expensive, too broad" something, something.
I live in that district, and I assure you he's a conservative. But, he's not crazy and this district is just purple enough that crazy wouldn't sell. He knows that.
I do believe the "suckers & losers" stuff was the final straw, but he was critical of the fraud since before the '16 election.
His dislike of the "scorched earth" element of his party is real, but he's no dem.

(76,951 posts)He's not a rabid anti-choice type, but he's not open about right to choose.
Kind of riding the fence there.
He's not shown signs of being a racist or xenophobe, but he hasn't made statements supporting BLM or similar groups.
He's far from liberal, but his party has skewed so far crazy right that he looks liberal by comparison.
In his defense, he does appear to have scruples & a moral center, so trumpism was a bridge too far (by a lot). He also believes in government, so negotiations & compromises are in his vocabulary.
All that said, given he wins big, and has won his primaries by even more, he could run as an "I" or "D" and still win.
I think he's seeing a collapse of the crazy wing of the party coming and is positioning himself to fill the leadership vacuum.
Another reason he won't dump the R after his name.

(2,194 posts)During his presidency, it wasn't America First. Hillary Clinton hit the nail on the head when she correctly pointed out during her presidential campaign that it was actually Russia First. Russia first, Trump and family second, cronies third, and America dead last.
