(4,170 posts)His younger years were so tragic and difficult. Ill always admire him for being the Queens support behind the scenes. A true self confident man, not threatened by a powerful woman. HE set a wonderful example in that regard. Many here apparently do not share appreciation for that example.

(102,107 posts)history and arc of his 99 years of life and the specials showing all that occurred DURING that life. He lived through 13 US Presidents and all the incredible inventions and scientific advances during those near hundred years. While anyone who lived that long could have a phenomenal story that could be told, someone in the unique role held by Prince Philip had exposure to so much more.
History is my thing and I have found the documentary coverage of his long life to be fascinating. Not because of celebrity adoration or any love for ROYALTY of any kind, but the global events that his life reflected. I'd not even think of turning away.

(4,170 posts)Not to mention an example (maybe the first) of a strong, confident man giving up his career for a strong, confident woman, one who became the longest reigning monarch in history.

(70,641 posts)when never having seen any of the nominees, how I sampled a couple of seasons of the KARDASHes *and* Celebrity Apprentice -- all such to know, for myself, some of what is in the general soup out there. If people are interested in reconstructions like "The Crown" or whatever, why not watch a real time thing.

(4,170 posts)Anne was his daughter. Sad you find this so amusing. Not that a single person in that funeral party knows who you are, nor would they care what you think even if they did know.

Prince Philip is consort to Queen Elizabeth. His standard is quartered Denmark, Greece, Mountbatten, and Edinburgh: the two royal families the prince descends from, his surname, and his title. Denmark: three blue lions passant on a yellow field strewn with nine sea-leaves, depicted as red hearts. Greece: a white centered cross on a blue field. Mountbatten: 5 vertical stripes of white and black. Edinburgh: on a white field, a black three-towered castle, with white details except for red roof, banners, and gate, on a rocky grey base with a stairway leading up to the gate (usually 1:2, rarely 2:3).
Duke's flag, before Elizabeth's ascension
Flag of the Duke of Edinburgh (1951-1952)
According to Carr (1953) the design of the Dukes standard, approved by His late Majesty King George VI in November 1951, consisted of the arms of the Duke impaled with those borne by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, when she was the Heiress Presumptive. However since Queen Elizabeth came to the Throne the Duke has used the standard consisting of his arms only.
