As has been said, the insurrection investigation is likely to be the most complicated case in DOJ history.

(8,445 posts)I don't have faith that he'll be charged for the insurrection that he incited. I'm much more confident that he'll be facing lawsuits from some of those he incited.

(4,533 posts)If we say the new laws are racist, that we should March on the state senate to protest a scheduled vote on the New laws, and violence erupts, should the leaders of the March be indicted? Indicting Trump would lead to indictments of protest leaders everywhere. We need to define free speech very broadly.

(4,533 posts)Who protests more, republican or dems? Protests often involve cations which might be viewed as illegal, like looting or arson. If we charge organizers or promoters of protests as liable for such ancillary crimes it will hurt democrats a lot more than Republicans. And more importantly it will discourage political protest. To protect political dissent I want free speech to be interpreted extremely broadly. That is why I oppose indicating Trump for his horrible incitement of the Jan 6 sedition. I pretty much oppose almost all sedition laws. They do more to suppress legitimate dissent than prevent very rare real sedition. In fact they pretty much only suppress legit political dissent.

(90,633 posts)...during my life, and not one involved violence against people or destruction of property.
I dont know who you hang out with, but First Amendment rights pertain to words, petitions, loud debate, marches not incitement to riot, insurrection, looting, arson, murder, or civil war. Those actions are against the law. January 6 was an insurrection and Trump et al were inciting it.

(90,633 posts)...kind of action against former US Presidents. Trump tried to get us into a civil war, and his erstwhile followers STILL are.
Parlous times, Stinky, parlous times.

(67,786 posts)What really got me thinking - and actually kinda hopeful - was the news of the first guilty plea was in. The guy is a leader of The Oath Keepers. He's also flipped and must now testify as requested to federal, state, and local authorities. He is also going into the witness protection program. Add to that the DOJ describing their investigation into the lead-up to January 6 as the most complex in the history of the DOJ.
This all tells me he has a LOT to tell and the DOJ is pulling on a lot of threads.
I will also postulate the goal is to get to the biggest fish before the 2024 election just to be sure someone like former guy doesn't throw wrenches into the gears and sand in the gas tank.

(23,367 posts)The coup attempt involved so much more than the events at the Capitol building. So much so that former defense secretaries made an anti-coup statement prior to those events. The conspiracy was much broader and far-reaching.

(111,076 posts)I think there may be a time limit on DOJ's effort to charge him?
The division simply would not be worth the effort.
But, in my opinion, they should charge a few around him. They could start with Rudy and Don Jr. and work their way up.
Whatever decision they make, the question will remain, "Just how important is justice?"
