(22,631 posts)That intubation and extubation are two of the most invasive and potentially trauma causing procedures performed in medicine.
There can also be devastating long term effects depending on the length of time the patient requires intubation.
Permanent damage to the vocal cords, which must remain stretched, open and immobilized during the intubation, can lead to voice and swallowing disorders.
This can result in long term respiratory system dysfunction including the inability to maintain airway valving which is important in speech, breathing and swallowing. These injuries can lead to respiratory incompetence and pneumonia.
The use of physical, wrist restraints and chemical restraints in the form of sedatives and tranquilizers are important to protect a possibly delirious, confused patient from self extubation which is extremely dangerous and damaging.
Many patients experience what is referred to as hospital psychosis days and sometimes months after being returned to consciousness following sedation for not just respirator use but sometimes just after an extended period of sedation.
My heart is truly broken for the doctors, patients and families. This is a horrific illness and the trauma will be with us for generations.
Wear a mask. Get the jab. Save a life. Please.

(64,988 posts)He was having cascade seizures & got a tube to breathe. They did exactly as you said.
The first pass, no. But, with direct observation they saw him twice trying to remove the tube.
So, they put him under deep sedation and restrained his wrists.
He could move his hands, maybe a foot, but not enough to get them up to grab the tube.
Seemed cruel, but was clearly for his own good.
