I can joke because it looks like the pilot made it out OK. Nice splashdown, though. That is a difficult maneuver to finish without flipping the plane or worse.

Aviator made it out safely. The plane looks to be salvageable, but it will involve a boatload of work.

prop up, tail down, slide into homeplate.

that was some mighty fine piloting. or in the words of a boating friend of mine, "Another successful crash landing"...

make an emergency landing in the ocean. Pilot was ok. Story in the LA Times next day identified the pilot as F. Lee Bailey, who had been a Marine Corps pilot. This was many years prior to him being one of OJ's defense attorneys.

Sorry, but that was dangerous. And that plane is about 75 years old. Should it have been flying?

They've been completely rebuilt and inspected and certified for flight.
We don't know what went wrong here, but this can happen to just about any aircraft, no matter how modern it is, especially prop driven planes.
