Omaha Nebraska, Westroads Mall. The second shooting at this mall in less a month. One male victim dead, a woman left with non life threatening injuries and the shooter is being sought.
I grew up not far from there and worked as a bus boy and a dishwasher at a Walgreens restaurant when I was in junior high in the 80s.

I just hope that I am fortunate not to be a victim of gun violence, nor know anybody that is.
These shooting incidents are no longer news, they're as much a part of daily life in America, as the sun rising and setting.

(9,998 posts)I'm 55, and gun violence has been a way of life for more than 2 decades now. I don't expect anything to be different when I'm in my 70's or 80's or 90's. I hope that at some point, I'm able to escape this dysfunctional country. I think that elsewhere in the world, we're a big joke. I'd love to believe that there is a battle to stay and fight for, but I feel like the battle has been lost. It is what it is. America is what it is.

My heart broke many years ago when I finally came to terms with all that you have said. We are not the best and brightest and all the other adjectives fed to us while we stuff our faces with cheeseburgers, drive gas guzzlers and shout USA USA USA.
Freedom in all its forms including economic, health and opportunity is qualified and not available to anyone but the whitest and wealthiest.
You are right, America is what it is. Our hands are tied. The measures needed to improve are so mired in regulations, stifled by conservative minorities and hamstrung by corporations who run things.
If you can find another country that will have you, please try, with my blessing. At 67 and married, it is not an option for me. Accepting our countrys mediocrity has actually helped me. At least we arent Russia, and I am not Nevalny. I can criticize my elected officials without fear of being poisoned. I suppose thats something.

(9,998 posts)What's frustrating, is that I know the entire country is not that way. I do encounter people, like yourself, who are aware of the problems that exist. It's the other 30-40% that I feel cannot be worked around.
You make a lot of sense in how you maintain sanity by comparing America to a country like Russia. Kind of an extreme comparison, eh? Sad that you need to use Russia, like YAY, we're a better place to live than Russia!
In reality, you know that it would not take much for us to become a country that poisons it's rivals. That practically happened on January 6, right? Sad.

(4,552 posts)Jan 6 was frightening. Watching in real time, all I could think of was:
Why arent the authorities stepping in to stop this attack.
Where are the good-guys?

(13,543 posts)I used to go to this mall all the time when I lived there and also when I visited after moving away.
The amount of gun violence and violence with military-type weapons is unacceptable.

(9,998 posts)I don't see that changing anytime soon. America is hopelessly divided, and sanity will never win out.
