Especially over the last 8 years or so, white supremacist (and other supremacist behavior) has manifested undeniably in academia. Over the last couple of years I've been shocked by some leaders in progressive movements (P2P peer-to-peer, mutual aid, cooperatives, environment movements, etc.) who tend to be more academic theorists than boots on the ground and their growing vitriol toward "woke" movements, BLM and so forth. They have swung all the way to the right and I now consider them right-wing extremists, often following Jordan Peterson. Yuck.

Yes, I know academia is one of many systems steeped in white supremacy (and patriarchy). But when we think of individuals who embrace white supremacy, whether they're aware of it or not, it doesn't fit into a nice, neat description of personality type or education level, other than selfishness being a common trait.

I think that's a mistake many of us on the left make, as well as not recognizing it among our own ranks. Because it is most definitely there, though often much more subtle which can be even worse. Black friends through the years have commented that they prefer a known KKK member any day over the death by a thousand cuts seemingly well-meaning white people can often inflict. At least they know where they stand immediately with a KKK member.
