Texas law currently requires citizens to obtain a license to carry in order to carry a firearm openly or concealed. If passed into law, the new bill would remove that restriction, allowing Texans to carry guns without having to pass a background check or go through training. Texas would become the 14th state to implement such a law.
The bill arrives on the heels of several recent mass shootings that have taken place around the country. On Thursday night, a gunman killed eight people including four members of the Sikh community in an Indianapolis FedEx warehouse. Earlier this month in Bryan, Texas, a man opened fire at a cabinet company where he was previously employed. One man died and five others were injured, including a state trooper.
On Twitter, former congressman Beto ORourke expressed his support for those protesting the bill at the state capitol in Austin. He echoed their demands for common sense gun laws.
Grateful to @joecascinotx and those doing their best to stop HB 1927 and ensure that we have common sense gun laws in Texas, ORourke tweeted. Thank you for showing up and stepping up for Texas!

(37,319 posts)people stay home because they are afraid of getting shot. Republicans do not recognize the sanctity of life. Until something starts hurting profits, they will do nothing. And even then, they screw it up.

(11,579 posts)In fact it reads "a well-regulated militia" which Article 1;Section 8 of the Constitution of the U.S. outlines. It makes clear what a militia is, how it is to be funded, and regulated. In one of many lines it reads, "The Congress shall have power...To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union...".
So there you have it. Citizens that are trained militia need to be armed and "well regulated". Their purpose is to repel invasions and insurrections that threaten our country--not be the problem. By the way, we now have a National Guard--our organized, regulated, law abiding militia.
There is nothing in the 2nd Amendment that says every person, even the mentally unstable, should "bear arms" the same as our regulated Militia. It defeats the intention by turning our citizens into a threat.

(2,636 posts)So, why do I need a license to drive a car? Why do I have to register it in Texas? Why bother with tags?
By the same token, why should I bother to be trained to operate on someone?
It's to the point where unless a rich, white, GOP donor loses their family in massacre is our only hope.
We're being held hostage by a sick minority--by gun nutters who are afraid of Black people, religious fanatics who want to pray away a virus, refuse to vax or mask, and are angry we aren't back to normal.
Fearful, racist, ignorant Pro life gun humpers is a sick, sick combination.
