As a brutal wave of coronavirus cases batters India, public health experts worry that a new, possibly more virulent coronavirus variant could be racing through the crowded nation of over 1.3 billion people.
The new variant that has a so-called double mutation is said to be fueling this deadlier new wave of infections. With over 200,000 fresh cases for the past three consecutive days, India has surpassed Brazil to be the second worst-affected and has already begun to overwhelm the hospitals and crematoriums.
This is a variant of interest we are following, Maria Van Kerkhove, the World Health Organization (WHO)s technical lead officer on Covid, told Bloomberg.
Having two of these mutations, which have been seen in other variants around the world, are concerning, she said. There was a similarity with mutations that increase transmission as well as reduce neutralization, possibly stunting the ability of vaccines to curb them, she added.

(22,632 posts)We need to learn all we can so we can support health care workers and society at large, ride the relentless waves that are approaching.
I am very concerned about the enduring trauma we will all have as a result of this pandemic. The doctors and the nurses will need everyone's support for a long time. My heart breaks for us all.

We've lost over 3600+ Healthcare Workers, already.
They're exhausted and feel forgotten.
People used to send pizzas, take-out, etc. to their local ED's but haven't in a very long time. (They thought the flyovers were useless, they need help and support)
Tomorrow, I'll be purchasing some pizzas and having them delivered to my local ED's.

(22,632 posts)An anonymous pizza delivery is a great idea. And it's something I can actually pull off. We have a new local pizza parlor and I have been meaning to check them out, too.
We have a small country hospital that serves the entire county and we are one of the most expansive rural counties in North Carolina. I'm going to see if the switchboard operator can give me a headcount. Thanks for planting the seed.

I'll be doing the same tomorrow.
