Even here in California there are no lockdowns, businesses are in full swing, massive gatherings of people in fairgrounds, parks, etc. The only difference is that people still wear masks

(22,984 posts)1. I was in a kn95 the entire time, and I'm half vaxxed and I didn't go near anyone and it was outside.
2. We have each other's names and will be contacted if anyone becomes sick. I trust the others to report.
3. We were at all stages of vax: Some without masks admitting they're not vaxxed, and getting right up close to each other.
So, yeah, it worries me, but at the same time, I'm vaxing and masking effectively, so, I think I'm ok.
But others are just being fools.

(56,250 posts)Mrs unblock and I will be fully vaccinated by mid-may, but were my stay hunkered down until the active case count in the area drops to a less scary level.
Rather worrisome to go out when the active case count is still high and rising.
Ms. Toad
(38,793 posts)but that decline started on Wednesday or Thursday (on a national level). Prior to that time, the cases had been rising for a solid month.
Last Sunday, the number of active cases was up 4%. Yesterday, they were down 3% (for the first time in more than a month).

(4,475 posts)we still have a ways to go with this pandemic.
I think continuing to wear masks is a pretty good idea.

(54,770 posts)they required masks -- sign in door -- among all those rubes. We had ours on anyway.
...it is way too early for business as usual.
There is a big difference between cautious reopening and let 'er rip.
I have both of my shots and still practice the big 3 - hand wash, social distance, wear a mask (N95 only).

(7,733 posts)Im in a red county and I see a mixed bag. At this point it doesnt bother me as much as it used to. With Joe in charge, I know there are millions of people out there who have had their shots. People just wearing masks is pretty darned good, IMO.

(10,777 posts)First time I've been inside a bank in over a year.
None of the employees of the three banks I visited were wearing masks. Only a few of the customers were. I was double-masked, despite the fact that I got my second Moderna shot two weeks ago.
Daily cases in my state are currently higher than they were last April. Daily deaths are about the same as last April.
I don't understand why so many people aren't willing to do one simple thing to protect themselves (and others).

(12,286 posts)I can only hope they have all been vaccinated.
I have.
I intend to dine out in early May for the first time in 14 months.
I am a little jittery about it but I know that I am vaccinated and the people I am dining with are vaccinated and need to trust that the vaccine work.
If people are gathering without vaccination then they will most likely get infected and some will get hospitalized and a small portion of those people will die.
C'est la vie.

(910 posts)i don't care anymore. i'm vaccinated and i still wear a mask because i'm taiwanese, and i'm used to it.
i still keep my social distance up.

(759 posts)As long as folks are masked and getting vaccinated a planned return to a more normal life seems appropriate. I certainly dont want to be a hermit forever.
I am concerned about my brother and SIL. They are Trump humpers and I am unsure whether they will get the jab. Dear SIL is very proud of getting COVID and I suspect she may decline the vaccine. We had a yearly thing where they would come to visit and we would attend the Indy 500. As long as we kept the conversation away from politics I enjoyed the visits. Hubby is adamant they they not visit until they do get the jab, and I agree.

(14,104 posts)But more so people I love and care about vulnerable going through life saving therapies.
Many people are not following social distancing, no mask or improper masks, eating in restaurants etc. It is not time for biz as usual. If youre going to a restaurant and eating you are taking your mask off -automatic higher chance of transmitting Covid etc. This is such a stupid country with so many stupid people-this couldve been over after 3 months if what needed to be done had been done which wouldve been a strict lockdown with everybody complying and if we had not been lied to and had been told to wear masks immediately. Instead we have over 550,000 people dead, murdered in my opinion. And not much sign of the stupidity ever ending.

(5,057 posts)Im pretty much done caring about it. If people dont want to do the right things, theyre going to get what theyre asking for. Ive been following the protocols the whole time, have gone to work through most of this and have been lucky enough to avoid getting it. I finally get my first vaccine shot this coming Saturday.

(9,714 posts)Had the federal government only mandated wearing masks in public in the spring of 2020, with harsh penalties for those who refused, we'd be so far ahead of where we are now. Masks save lives.

(8,848 posts)what's going on, especially given that performance of vaccines with P1 and South African variants is an unknown. Not a time to give in, relax too much. I'm more fine with not worrying about surfaces as much, not worrying about being in a store masked for a short time.
Our position has always been to do what we can to be safe. If it's easy and not otherwise important, we do it. Was recently in Northern California and mask wearing was nearly 100%, indoor eating very limited. Southern California not as careful and yes it is bothersome
Ms. Toad
(38,793 posts)So as long as people are wearing masks, I'm fine.
What yanks my chain is that mask orders are not being enforced here - despite (in some instances) 3 layers of laws requiring businesses to enforce the laws.
I stayed in my house, by and large, from the second week in March through late August. Since then, I have been teaching in person (and hybrid), shopping when needed, etc. I knew masks were critical back in March - and protected the wearer. I was just waiting for the data to catch up - as it did. I was relatively confident that I would avoid COVID 19, and the only real threat I ever faced was that people living with me were not as careful. There were months during the period from August through vaccination in late March when I wore two masks, at home, and slept in a recliner.
I'll continue to report businesses not enforcing the mask order. But - as long as people are wearing masks (and preferably socially distancing), it doesn't bother me.

(3,557 posts)Theyre 10 and 12 and probably wont be vaccinated for a while. Ive been vaccinated And it has been available for all adults for quite some time in my area. For the most part, the people who arent vaccinated are the people who are hesitant about it for whatever reason. So I say fuck em.

(7,611 posts)We live in Connecticut. My wife and I have been going to restaurants as soon as they opened up in the fall. Everyone here wears a mask and keeps social distancing but I confess I am eager to get back to normal. I want to go back to the theater and the symphony. I find the statements by Dr. Faucci and others sometimes contradictory and I suspect a little too conservative. Joe Biden asked everyone in January to keep wearing masks for a hundred days. We're about at that deadline. I'll hang in there a little while longer. But I would like to get my life back.
Saw an article in Slate (I think) that there is no reason to wear a mask outside if you aren't in a crowd. Wish some of the health experts would speak up if that's true.
I live in a state where the numbers are going up because of people not getting vaccinated, going to restaurants and bars (FREEDUMB and all of that).

(77,195 posts)If that means masks in stores, or outdoor gatherings with mostly vaccinated folks, then no.
If back to normal means acting like it's October 2019, and the majority are not vaxxed, then yes.

(15,909 posts)...most businesses are still requiring masks, they're keeping up their plexiglass shields, and I haven't seen anyone yet in the past few days ignoring mask requirements by businesses that require them.
Businesses and restaurants are a lot more busy, but people haven't totally thrown all caution to the wind around here yet.
I feel reasonably safe going out to eat at restaurants during off-hours when they aren't too busy. And even though I have just one does of Moderna going for me, once that's two-weeks old, and my immunity is at about 80% (with serious risk of hospitalization or death lower than that), I'll feel a lot safer too.
I'll keep masking up until more people are vaccinated, until I'm fully vaccinated, and wherever businesses want people to mask, whichever comes latest.
