the Ardennes. Nearly lost his feet from frostbite, too. He was a corporal; due to loss of men he ended up the highest ranking soldier in the unit and was awarded a Bronze Star.

He Never Talked About the War except to mention a companion here and there.

We have two bayonets he brought back with him. I have one and my sister has the other. One of them has the double lightening bolts on the hilt.

My father was also Antifa. 82 Airborne. He made a bunch of combat jumps, D day for one, and the Battle of the Bulge.
I think I will get that bumper sticker made. I know my father would be outraged by current events.

Dad was a little scary.....

Decorated, (Bronze Star, Purple Heart), Disabled veteran of combat in the Vosges Mountains of France, 100th Division, 3rd Army. 3 of my uncles served. Our neighbors were vets too - Airborne, and Seabees. You did'nt point a STICK like it was a gun, around those hard combat vets! Even if you were the town cop........

He was a dentist with the US Army and helped to liberate Dachau Concentration Camp. He gave testimony to the US Holocaust Museum. I saw his pictures of the camp on the day of liberation. He was able to communicate with many of the survivors because he spoke Yiddish. My wife said that when he told me of his experiences of helping in the liberation, it was the first time she ever heard him speak of it. Shortly after that he went to give his testimony to the museum.

The interviewer asked him which Allied troops did he and the other Germans fear most.

He replied: "The Americans."

When asked why, he replied: "Well, the French go into battle shouting, and the British go into battle singing, but the Americans fight in complete silence. There was something terrifying about these silent, implacable troops making their way across the battlefield."

It sure is different from the Hollywood image of the cheerful, gum-cracking citizen soldier handing out Hershey bars to little kids, bathing out of their helmets, writing letters to their girls back home on toilet paper, etc.

It’s a great point I’d never considered before.

It’s kinda funny.

I know the Germans called some of the paratroopers, “Devils in baggy pants “.

In the picture that was posted, you can see the baggy pants

They called them "golf clothes."

The U.S. Armed Forces were the first to make a distinction between combat uniforms and off-duty or dress uniforms.

The German soldier was issued a rig he was expected to wear in combat, and also in parades, inspections, etc. For "dress" functions, the uniforms would be cleaned and pressed, and decorated with the soldiers medals and awards. But basically, it was the same uniform that was expected to stand up to the rigors of battle. So it was expected to look smart, well-fitted, and reflective of centuries of Teutonic military tradition.

The American combat uniform design stressed comfort and durability. So baggy 'golf clothing' look or not, it got the job done.

It is neatly folded on the top shelf of my closet. It is made of wool, too.

I have considered giving it to the little county museum back home, as they have a display about the war veterans, along with a picture of my dad in uniform.

And Eisenhower would be appalled at what happened to the Republican Party. If he was here now he would join most of his family now as a Democrat.....same as the Rockefeller family.

They didn’t leave the Party the Party left them.
