Has there actually been an abnormal amount of

mass shootings recently or is the media just reporting them. Seems we go through periods where you don't hear of mass shootings much for months them suddenly they are every day. I get the feeling whenever there isn't a lot of news the media starts reporting them just for ratings until something sexier comes along. That goes for about any subject the media seems to be only capable of reporting one thing at a time. If say next week there is some trouble in the middle east that will the subject 24/7 until something else gets their attention. Say what you will about Trump but he was a master of diversion every time he would get in a jam he always would do something more outrages to change the subject. That's how he managed to get elected in 2016 he was up with Morning Joe and Fox every day.

the popular vote by around 5 million to break even. I can't imagine what would happen if a Republican won the popular vote and lost the EC

Ten years ago, the Austin shooting wouldn't have been reported as a mass shooting incident, and most people around the country would have never heard of it. The Indianapolis shooting would have been, however, as would Atlanta. So, it's a bit of both.

There were more mass shootings in 2020 than in 2019, but not very many of them anything other than local news.

For a year there were no mass school shootings, so all the others were pretty much ignored.

So many mass shootings don't garner the headlines for any more than one story. When you have one that goes wall to wall for days then it seems the media puts forward the "less sexy" mass shootings for a couple of days as a finality. Right now there seems to be a bit more to it. There is a societal movement and the media recognizes it. The media does push narratives. Some we like and some we don't. Right now they are riding the wave.

it seems like there are cycles when you don't hear of them for months then suddenly they are like a weekly or daily acurance.

You are referencing singular events, for the most part. Additionally, society has been well conditioned to easily accept most police shootings. To be fair, under the current system, it’s understandable. Doesn’t have to be this way.
