Herschel Walker, the University of Georgia legend, could run for U.S. Senate next year on the Republican ticket. And if he does, hed have the formidable duo of his own illustrious legacy and a motivated, vengeful former President Donald Trump clearing a path for him.
Walker, 59, led the Georgia Bulldogs to their most recent national championship in 1980 as a freshman. He won the Heisman two years later and dominated college football so thoroughly that his name still ranks atop most best-ever lists. Hes wound through a range of pursuits since his days in Athens NFL player, Olympic bobsledder, MMA fighter but for many Georgians, hell always be a Bulldog.
I thought athletes needed to be quiet.

(102,225 posts)I do not wish to deride him but he always struck me as far too credulous and readily manipulated by those around him. I can't speak to the years since, which might have brought great maturity and growth, but I do think football and sports always came before ANY educational opportunities afforded him during his time at UGA. I surely don't think his time with Trump would have fostered such "growth."
But look who AL sent to the Senate (Tommy Tuberville), based on no more than the fact he was a known commodity as the former coach for Auburn football. Definitely not a well-learned, nor frankly, an intelligent man.

(5,586 posts)I mean, Ronald fucking Reagan got elected to the Presidency, and is at the top of many conservatives list of best President's ever. Don't even get me started on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

(52,155 posts)not that I thought he did it well but he did at least have governmental experience. I am beginning to wonder about whether democracy can last here. We just watched 4 years of utter incompetence at the national level help kill over a half million people, and significant numbers of people still are like, well why not just elect any old person.

(436 posts)But I heard years ago that he couldn't read. And that is more common than you'd think among some athletes. My wife's best friend taught her husband to read ( She's an elementary school teacher ) He's a former Cincinnati Bengal and played in the SEC for four years

(5,524 posts)For telling everyone that there is no racism.
There is the minor problem that he doesn't actually live in Georgia

(25,962 posts)They're throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if a big name will stick. Other than his recognition factor, Herschel Walker has no real political chops at all. If it even gets that far, one debate will crush him.
