A Walgreens pharmacy mistakenly administered saline injections instead of COVID-19 vaccines in a mix-up, the company has confirmed.
A spokesperson told local news outlets that a "limited number" of people were affected by the mistake, which occurred at a store in Monroe, North Carolina. Those affected had been informed, Walgreens said, and were offered a vaccine shot for when they were able to return.
"We are investigating what happened and have taken immediate steps to review our procedures with the location to prevent this from occurring again," the company said in a statement.
A woman who reported being among those affected said that her experience had taken place on March 20, when she and her husband were due to receive the Pfizer vaccine at a store on Fincher Street.

(13,091 posts)I know of saline drips, but I have not heard of saline injections.
Why would saline solution be in the vials ???

(64,995 posts)But, the active vaccine is diluted with saline. Per Pfizer instructions, as 0.9% saline solution is used.
Once it was diluted, I doubt one could distinguish vaccine from the diluent.

(57,073 posts)Please see my post below about Walgreens messing up the follow-up vax scheduling!
While four weeks is likely still in the OK range, I'm sure those folks would much rather have had their 2nd shot for protection sooner!

(44,973 posts)It needs to be diluted with saline. I guess they forgot to add the Pfizer.
Moderna and J&J don't need to be diluted.

(44,973 posts)I am assuming they somehow forgot to add the Pfizer and used the pure saline instead.

(57,073 posts)I'd read that they were incorrectly scheduling Pfizer vaccines 4 weeks apart, rather than the recommended 3 weeks, to prevent scheduling mix-ups.
If you cannot count to 3 or 4, you probably should not be handling ANY phrmaceuticals!
There are numerous articles online covering this story, here is a link to one:

Walgreens hasn't been following dose-timing guidelines for Pfizer vaccine, report finds
Walgreens has been scheduling Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine appointments four weeks apart, rather than the CDC's recommended three weeks, The New York Times reported April 5.
Walgreens said it has been scheduling the doses four weeks apart because it's faster and simpler to schedule all of its vaccine appointments this way. The Moderna vaccine doses are supposed to be given four weeks apart, so using the same gap for both vaccines was "the easiest way to stand up the process based on our capabilities at the time," Kevin Ban, MD, Walgreens' chief medical officer, told the Times.
Kate Grusich, a CDC spokesperson, told the Times the agency has asked Walgreens to stop using the longer-than-recommended time period between vaccine doses. Walgreens said it's changing its system and, starting as soon as the end of this week, it will schedule Pfizer doses three weeks apart.
A lot of folks might not know something is wrong if they are told to come back in 4 weeks for their 2nd shot. Easy to confuse the Pfizer and Moderna protocol, also many folks might not have access to the Internet for constantly updated information. But pharmacists absolutely should know to folow directions on administration!!!!

(25,962 posts)No scheduling issues, three weeks apart, and I have no doubts that I actually received the vaccine. Perhaps this is a localized issue?

(57,073 posts)Maybe regional. Not sure.

(7,412 posts)If you wait 2 weeks and 6 days you can schedule Dose 2 at three weeks.
Not one day earlier.

(8,698 posts)Some pharmacists did the same thing last month. They changed shifts and the incoming pharmacist thought the other guy had already combined the two.
