Remember this?
BIG SUR Highway 1 at Rat Creek will reopen Friday at noon, a week earlier than expected, thanks to continued dry weather and consistent work efforts on the $11.5 million project.
About 150 feet of the coastal highway south of Big Sur washed out Jan. 28 with mud and debris from the Dolan Fire burn scar.

(51,582 posts)6. Now i'm concerned about this year's dry winter.
More fires and then floods is in our future.

(51,545 posts)8. Dry winter meant less spring vegetation, our only saving grace.
But the dry winter made pine beetle infestation worse, and what is out there is bone dry. We're in for a terrible fire season.

(51,582 posts)10. You're right. Less underbrush to burn quickly.
The desert flowers aren't blooming on schedule so that is the first sign of things to come. In San Diego we had several years of average or above average rainfall, but not this year.

Chances of going back are slim, but it is exceptionally beautiful country.
