The prosecution offered charges at multiple levels of culpability. The Jury could just as easily picked 3rd degree murder and dropped 2nd degree.

Likely he was found guilty on the first round of voting by the peers (typically the foreman will poll the jury pool on their view, and discussion will be had if any of them has any qualms). Mild discussion was had. But it was simple and straightforward.
