https://kfor.com/news/new-texas-covid-19-variant-resistant-to-antibodies-researchers-say/amp/COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KXAN) Texas A&M University researchers have identified a new COVID-19 variant that originated in the state.
Scientists at the Texas A&M Global Health Research Complex (GHRC) identified the variant called BV-1 after Brazos Valley, where it originated from a saliva sample taken from a student as a part of an ongoing testing program. Researchers believe its related to the United Kingdom variant.
The student with the confirmed case showed mild flu-like symptoms for nearly a month, suggesting this new variant may cause a longer than normal infection in young adults. Although only one mild case has been confirmed, researchers are worried that the variant shows resistance to antibodies.
We do not at present know the full significance of this variant, but it has a combination of mutations similar to other internationally notifiable variants of concern, GHRC Chief Virologist Ben Neuman said in a press release. This variant combines genetic markers separately associated with rapid spread, severe disease and high resistance to neutralizing antibodies.

(21,340 posts)faster than the vaccine manufacturers can keep up with in their boosters.
Thanks to the stupid anti maskers.

(7,404 posts)There have been many articles published discussing this topic, mostly as reasoning not to delay longer than necessary between the first and second doses.
Since a small percentage of people still get covid after being vaccinated or between their first and second doses, new mutations/variants are more likely to emerge from those infections because it trying to find a way around the vaccine protection.

(7,404 posts)Viruses developing vaccine resistance is well published, thats why vaccines have to evolve as well. Vaccinated individuals getting exposed to the virus are protected to some degree but it also gives the virus a playbook to evolve and develop resistance to that defense.

Naturally induced abs?
ETA - neutralizing abs. Meaning this variant is able to evade some immune response (administered and vaccine induced abs). A person should still be able to make antibodies in natural infection but it will take other immune responses to kill the virus.
Im concerned.

and we'll have to enforce it.

(3,014 posts)Is that it can evade the antibodies induced by current vaccines (if true - this has not been peer reviewed yet and more tests may show different results). We would need a yearly vaccine like influenza.

(7,263 posts)We will need a booster for the Moderna and Phizer in 6 to 12 months - both companies are working on it.
This comes from a close trusted source who works in a medical research facility and their doctors are already whispering about this probability to staff.
And both companies are whispering we are going to need a shot every 1 to 2 years, just like a flu shot.
Wanna bet the yearlies are not going to be free of charge for everyone?

But it is still a rumour, not verified by anything I can find out there so far.

(11,896 posts)This is what concerns me. Since healthcare in this country is considered a luxury, I will be surprised if the govt. pays for any further shots regarding Covid.

(4,602 posts)Resistance to antibodies happens and it doesnt mean antibodies dont work. It just means you need more of them to have a full effect.
Current vaccines I think put out 8x the number of antibodies as an infection does.
