January 6, 2021. It has become a festering gangrenous wound on the body politic that will be painful to treat and will require the amputation of some of those who participated in it, planned it or now condone it. Most of all, those who DENY that it was an insurrection---an attempted coup---must be banished from further participation in our government.
When the stench of a rotten gangrenous toe is ignored---it claims and destroys the foot---then the leg---and, then, the life of the fool who couldn't---or wouldn't---deal with it.
If the Republicans refuse to participate in such an investigation, we should brand them as complicit and go over, around or through them in order to proceed.
Again, "whatever it takes".

(70,504 posts)In his invites he gave out the day, the date, the time, and the place for the violent insurrection on
multiple occasions prior to the attempted overthrow of our Constitutionally elected government
including one in which he urged people to come to D.C. so they could "go wild."
He helped to pay for the 1/6/21 riot using his campaign funds.
He decapitated the D.C. National Guard so they could not respond to the violence that Trump wanted
so he could declare martial law and stay in power.
He refused to send help to the US Capitol when asked for it by Rep. McCarthy and allegedly by Vice
President Pence too.
After the violence that killed people, caused $30 million of damage to the Capitol Building and its
grounds, injured over 100 police, and disrupted the Constitutional certification of the Presidential
vote he told those people that "he loved 'em."

(43,161 posts)We have little or no experience in extra-legal politics against the state. Rebellions that have been quashed in history have generally been put down by strong rulers - monarchs, noblemen, or worse, dictators.
If this mess gets straightened out it will be because Democrats kept their sights on the prize of pure and well-defended democracy.
Best book I can find on seizing power while it is in the streets, which is exactly what happens with an insurrection:

Free download. 10 Days that Shook the World.
Don't watch the movie. It was a romance. Read the book to understand the power shifts, factions, maneuvering, tectonic shifts of power. Bolsheviks paid no attention to other participating parties and powers. Just keep issuing decrees, laws, rules, proclamations. We are not prepared for this!!

(11,563 posts)But whatever word is applied, it is an appalling juncture to have reached. There have been other extra-governmental attempts to seize power, but they were not even half-baked, compared to what we now see. This is the very first time in my life I thought something so monstrous could actually succeed.
