India being overrun by its massive virus surge

India has been overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of new coronavirus cases daily, bringing pain, fear and agony to many lives as lockdowns have been placed in Delhi and other cities.

India’s Health Ministry reported 295,041 new cases on Wednesday with 2,023 deaths, taking total fatalities to 182,553. India has since the start of the pandemic recorded 15.6 million cases, the second highest behind the United States.

Newly reported cases have exceeded 200,000 each day for a week — with people being infected faster than they can be tested.

“This time, infection is spreading so fast that people are not getting time to get medicines. Many people are dying before we can get a test report,” said Dr. S K Pandey of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

India do be overwhelmed by the virus. 1.3 billion people, almost all of them live in very crowded conditions. Probably a lot of people lack adequate sanitation, and I'm sure health care is limited for many.

I also seem to recall that about a year ago there were reports to the effect that India was vastly under reporting its actual cases.

an new and virulent wave, but I am also disgusted that, with all our wealth and resources, we have 400,000 more deaths than they do.

The numbers don't make much sense.
Suddenly their daily cases are 18x what they were a year ago.
And, they're reporting 1,400 deaths per day on an average of nearly 250,000 cases.
A death rate of under 0.6%? When the entire planet is reporting a death rate of over 2% of cases? (Worldometer today shows 144,393,935 cases & 3.07 million deaths.)
Overall, their death rate is under 1/2%. Now, with this surge it's lower?
I think things there are far worse, and don't believe a direct comparison to the US is valid.

I doubt they even count people of certain castes. The real death toll is much higher in places like India, Russia and even Mexico than their governments report.

Now that their reporting infrastructure appears to be up to speed they have a 7 day moving average of almost 250,000.
But about one year ago, the moving average was around 1,400.
So, now it's 18 times worse?
And, if they're at (essentially) 1.7 million cases a week now, how do the only have 15+ million over 13 months.
I fear the situation is far worse than even these recent numbers suggest.
And, their cumulative numbers are even more tragic.

In cities that crowded & that many multifamily homes?
I think they were grossly undercounting and they're reporting infrastructure is catching up.
The death rate doesn't make sense given their medical access. It's 60% of the rest of the world.
I believe the situation is far more dire than reported.
They're not alone. Russia's case numbers don't make sense either, although their death to case ratio does.
