An almost entirely undisclosed program under U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's purview is secretly monitoring social media posts under the guise of needing to protect U.S. Postal Service employees and "infrastructure." The effort is called the Internet Covert Operations Program, or iCOP, and it is raising civil rights issues that one expert calls "serious constitutional concerns."
"The law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service has been quietly running a program that tracks and collects Americans' social media posts, including those about planned protests, according to a document obtained by Yahoo News," the news site reveals. "The details of the surveillance effort, known as iCOP, or Internet Covert Operations Program, have not previously been made public."

(25,467 posts)and the story doesn't pass the smell test as many have noted in other threads on the subject.
It's not a secret program, for one. Yahoo doesn't seem to understand that "Covert" is part of the name of the organization, not an attempt to hide its existence. It was covered in the USPIS's 2019 Annual Report.

Obviously, it could be abused. But if someone is planning to blow up a postal facility, and is stupid enough to announce or plan it on internet, think it would be nice to know before hand.
Maybe the Capitol Police and its Congressional Oversight members should have paid attention to social media before January 6th.
Besides, the program can hardly be called "covert" since it is right in the 2019 Annual Report of US Postal Inspection Service. I get the distaste for LaJoy, but first I've heard of hating on the Postal Inspection Service.
I just linked the same report in my post. Yahoo is way off base on this one, but that's not a surprise. I don't consider them a source unless it's independently confirmed elsewhere (and I don't mean Raw Story).

(7,281 posts)The U.S.P.S. needs to be secured as THE courier service for the PUBLIC.
Bombs, deadly Bio Chemical agents substances etc need to be monitored, and any planning by militias, boogaloos, all terrorists including domestic terrorist threat needs to be monitored. (ETA: Any attempt to use the U.S.P.S for trafficking)
And when Covid-19 began shut downs etc, I learned of the option to enroll in the postal Informed Delivery service, since my letter box is locked inside our club house, only person at a time may enter the building. I decided to opt in so that I knew in advance whether to expect mail, and what that mail is. And oh, the image of each piece of mail is scanned and shown in my email. I love it. I don't feel at all that my privacy is any more invaded than before I opted in, because scanning each piece of mail has been in full operation for years.
I'm good with that.
