General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust got word that our recycling collection will be paused, until further notice.
The reason given is, of course, staff shortages due to Covid. Fortunately, they will still be collecting trash and yard waste. I had noticed that collection was happening later and later, in the day.
My recycle was due to be picked up tomorrow. Fortunately, I don't have a full bin. I guess it will be going out in the regular trash, for the time being.
I have little doubt that we will never get back to how we lived, prior to 2020.
you are correct

Fortunately.

(15,084 posts)We have the option in my community to have recycled materials picked up curbside, or you can load it into your car and drive across town to do the recycling yourself. We pay for the pick-up service, but self-recycling is free.

(16,926 posts)It is SO reliant on market prices. SOMEBODY has to pay for 'whatever.'
Consider this from John Oliver:

(7,715 posts)We'll get to some semblance of normalcy. Not today, but I am hoping in a few months. It won't be exactly the same, but it won't be so alien that we won't recognize it.
Do you have any recycling centers nearby? I we have several in the vicinity, and I take stuff there every two weeks or so, when it won't fit into our recycling bin.

(26,260 posts)I have a pretty small 'footprint', to begin with, only needing to put out the bin every 2 or 3 weeks.
And maybe 14 months of being 99.999999999% self-isolated is wearing on my ability to be hopeful. Well, that and the situation with 2 nights of sub freezing weather seeming to be taking out all of my Spring blooms. I look forward to those, all year long, and seeing them wilting is heartbreaking.

(7,715 posts)I don't know? Maybe use plastic bags to keep the blooms warm? This probably tells you how little I know about gardening!
I checked out the John Oliver video mentioned by another poster...excellent and eye-opening!
If you have a place to store the recyclables, do that. Here in NorCal, we have recycling places everywhere, and it's super-convenient.
And when I see the damage that plastics etc are doing to our world, I try to do what I can to stop this madness. What I am doing is not close to enough, and that does make me a bit sad. However, I guess it's better than doing nothing (which is a gigantic rationalization).

(26,260 posts)Funny thing is, Daffodils bloom first and are incredibly tolerant of cold weather. I've seen them caked in ice, one day, and upright and beautiful, the next. Tulips, however, are a bit more delicate and they've really just started blooming.
And, of course, I now figure the pear and plum trees will have no fruit. I really had hoped that 2021 would be a better year. So far, it's far from better. Except, of course, the stores have flour, yeast and toilet paper.

(42,307 posts)which pick up recycling every other week, have stopped glass collection and plastic grocery bags. Glass cuz it's too expensive (heavy), bags cuz they get caught in the sorter.
I've read that lots of plastic is no longer recyclable because China won't accept the cheap crap we make for recycling.
