(15,767 posts)Why not a 20 dollar ticket and let the kid be on the way. I cant see why it needs an arrest. Thats my problem with most of these stops. Give a citation on 99 percent of stops. Let the court settle them or let them pay the fine if they desire. That alone would save lives. I bet police would even be for that in most cases.

(101,300 posts)As the article says, the boy getting arrested said:
"What the f**k? We live way in Edison. We live way in Edison," he tells police as they walk him to a patrol car. "What the f**k are you f**kers doing?"

I'd bet that they don't have signs up at the borders saying "all bicycles past this point must be registered with the Amboy police before proceeding. This costs 50 cents per year." Almost the literal definition of a penny-ante , waste of time ordinance.

(14,118 posts)licensed it since that was a city ordinance. The serial number and description of the bike
were part of the record so that if it was ever stolen it would be easy to track. My bike
never got stolen and I never complained about the process.

Watch the full video. There are ~50 kids riding bikes in the street. Riding on the wrong side. Riding wheelies. Not moving for traffic. Few helmets. Then they get warned and then they finally stop them.
These guys are old enough to ride their bikes all over the city then they are old enough to know and follow the traffic laws.

(61,694 posts)and hazard on the road. I don't understand why one of them was cuffed and why his bike was taken into possession.
The video doesn't seem to pick up what got him cuffed, but it must have happened between when he got off the bike and when the camera got him back in view. He was upset and I get it. Maybe he just said the magic words. You can get arrested for not having a license, so that's probably what it was. Either way, they let him go and released the bikes a little later from this.
The kids want to get out and ride their bikes and show off a little now that the cold weather is going away. The way they were doing it was going to get one of them hurt though and they are the perfect age to think they are invincible. The best solution to this would be for somebody to organize a ride like this that has a police escort that can make sure nobody runs up on them or runs and intersection and hits somebody.
A little community outreach and some time with the kids and cops doing something together wouldn't hurt anybody.

(118,274 posts)the traffic laws; and cars gave me the usual road courtesies
A few years later, I later moved a thousand miles away, where there was no bicycle-license requirement: I knew how to cycle in traffic, but the auto-drivers where I landed had serious attitude issues; they were aggressive, rude, and deliberately threatening

(47,397 posts)For a bicycle license? Obviously some police departments are OVER funded. This can hardly be considered a reasonable use of resources. That town appears to have too many police.
