17. From my perspective, on my 50 acres of mostly woods....

poplar is a pretty weak tree species. Grows fast in clear-cuts areas, but they seem to not hold up over time. Diseases and susceptibility to rot seems to limit their sizes to a 6" dia. butt max.

Kiln dried poplar is a reasonably stable utility lumber; we used it extensively for carcass buildups. It was also a workhorse for paint-grade projects, especially for milled molding.

That being said, it has an unpleasant odor when it's milled. Cat piss comes to mind.
