Horrific acid attack on Pakistani college student...

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/ny-acid-attack-asian-hate-crime-20210422-ttqdmi4zubc6nc3youd5j27yii-story.html

A stranger threw acid on a Pakistani college student from Long Island, disfiguring her face and shattering her life in an attack activists want investigated as an anti-Muslim hate crime.

Nafiah Ikram, 21, and her mom were getting out of their car outside their Elmont home March 17 when a man rushed up to her, threw a caustic liquid at her face and ran off.

Authorities believe the man may have fled in a 2013 or 2014 red Nissan Altima, Nassau County police said Wednesday.

The case has also drawn public attention, including a plea from celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi, who said in an Instagram video she’s known her family for years.

“We don’t even know if she’ll be able to see properly ever again, because she had contacts in, and the acid burned and melted the contacts into her eyes,” she said. Because she screamed, the acid got into her body, and she hasn’t been able to eat solid food since, Lakshmi said.

And a 10 grand reward if you know who did it.

where they stripped the prisoner naked in a closet-sized room and dripped acid through random holes in the ceiling on him. Prisoner never knows when or where the next drop is coming from.

Acid attacks are a common form of attack against a woman within that mindset.

I hope she does well.

It's done by muslims and non muslims(mostly Hindus).

With Muslims it's usually family that does it over "honor".

With Hindus and other non muslims it's becsuse the girl rejected them.

If someone kills Patty O'Neill with a car bomb, I am not looking for a Hispanic suspect.

I think this will turn out to be a "Family Friend" or uncle of some type. I doubt this was a stranger attack. (Not that there have not been such attacks from non-Muslims famously Katie Piper in London from an ex boyfriend) But those are outliers.

So my first thought is, was this a radical fundamentalist who had something against a woman being educated. It's also common if the woman rejected an advance. I hope the police are combing through her past interactions. I assume they are.

This happens a lot more than we think to Muslim women who walk outside the strict lines given to them. It's very sexist in nature.

This being NYC, a culturally diverse place, I hope they have people familiar with and geared investigating this.

Yes, this is horrific & I hope they find the perpetrator and max out the available penalty.
But, the headline says acid attack, and the text says caustic liquid.
Chemically, acid & caustic are opposites.
Damage to her tissues can actually be worse with caustic than with acid. With eyes, it doesn't make much difference.
Both can cause terrible damage .
But, skin & mucous membranes can be defatted by caustic, causing very deep burns.
I know these are details, but the reporter could have done some research.

horrific ways. As one of my drs. once said, sometimes you're never sure if you'll ever return home when you walk out the door, or if there will be some savage attack on you for some bizarre reason.

Acid attack

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_attack

====================================
Unlike in other countries, men are much more likely to be victims in Britain than women. Experts say that's because acid attacks are popular among gang members. (Simon Harding, a criminologist at Middlesex University, told the BBC that acid is becoming “a weapon of first choice” for gangs.)

That's in part because toxic substances such as drain cleaner, oven cleaner or ammonia are much easier to access in Britain than a knife or gun. Corrosive substances “are extremely easy to get hold of. You can buy them from hardware stores and don't have to register why you're purchasing it or what you want to use it for,” Harding told USA Today. “If you throw in someone’s face, it’s going to affect their eyes and eyesight so you have a high chance of getting away with it. It’s a very easy thing to do. You can ride up to someone on a bike and throw it at them.”

It's also harder to prosecute an acid attack than a knife attack. "The charges are more serious if you are caught with a knife and the tariff for prison sentences are much higher,” Harding said. “Acid is likely to attract a '[Grievous Bodily Harm] with intent' charge while using a knife is more likely to lead to the attacker being charged with attempted murder.” He also said that an acid attack can be harder to prove, since there's rarely any DNA evidence on the scene, and a plastic bottle is much easier to toss than a knife.

Is especially heinous. The person running up to her in the video and throwing the acid on her deserves much worse then just being arrested and put in a jail cell (if caught & convicted). She will most likely never see again, her life is irrevocably changed for whatever time she has left.

A famous philosopher said beware when fighting monsters that you yourself don’t become a monster. If someone caught this person and did the same to them I wouldn’t worry about that at all. There’s a big difference between the motives of holding someone accountable for willingly committing such a vicious act vs. attacking an innocent person for whatever the motive may be (religious, cultural, financial, jealousy etc. I doubt she did this to someone). As long as the
motive centers on accountability, Justice and is proportional. I would not be worried with what Nietzsche said.
