George W. Bush walks back 'nativist' comment, says he wrote in Condoleezza Rice last year

Bush said he painted the GOP "with too broad a brush," excluding "a lot of Republicans who believe we can fix the problem."

WASHINGTON — Former President George W. Bush walked back his comments this week describing today's Republican Party as "isolationist" and “nativist” and revealed that he wrote in Condoleezza Rice for president last November.

Bush, who is promoting a new book featuring his paintings of immigrants, was asked what he thought about his party in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show earlier this week and answered, "I would describe it as isolationist, protectionist and, to a certain extent, nativist."

In an interview with People magazine, the former president clarified his comment, saying, “Really what I should have said — there's loud voices who are isolationists, protectionists and nativists, something, by the way, I talked about when I was president."

"My concerns [are] about those -isms," he told the magazine. "But I painted with too broad a brush ... because by saying what I said, it excluded a lot of Republicans who believe we can fix the problem."

... his statements are not opposites. They even sound like they could be part of one conversation, instead of two.

Just like he and millions like him did when they voted for Johnson in 2016.

They don't like Trump's style, but they love how the conservative wish-list gets advanced under him. They don't want to own him, but like the deal they get on the lease.

Until these invisible "fixers" wrest party leadership from the loonies and straighten up, or until they start a new party to create separation, I'll remain highly skeptical.

Yah, the good ol' days: DU, Air America, White Rose radio show links (before the advent of podcasts), Cheney harming folks with his hunting "skills" not to mention his bunker manipulations of White House policy, Freeper callouts....

Forgive me if I'm not ready to accept Bush as a born-again progressive. I'll never forget the dejection I felt for weeks after he won reelection (that probably clobbered me more than when Trump won because I think I was resigned to the fact beforehand that people were buying his BS, also Bush toughened me up to accepting these catastophes better).

Did he think that he would be insulated from the mounting disasters as tRump continued to steer the country off a cliff?

That's some flawed and fucked up logic there.

If not for Cheeto he wouldn’t be able to even try this.

We’re too forgiving on our side friends. No way should any of these shits be allowed to rehabilitate their image.

Giving him time like he’s some elder statesman. Remind me again how many Americans died not only on this assholes watch, but as a result of?
