Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) broke Republican ranks on Wednesday to advance the nomination of Vanita Gupta for associate attorney general.
Murkowski joined all Democratic senators in voting to advance Gupta's nomination 51-49 toward a final vote, which is expected to take place later Wednesday.
Murkowski said on the Senate floor that after an "extensive" sit-down with Gupta, she was impressed by her professional credentials and her level of experience as well as the "passion that she carries with her with the work that she performs."
Murkowski said that although Gupta has made some "troubling and concerning" statements in other areas, she was "going to give the benefit of the doubt to a woman who I believe has demonstrated through her professional career to be deeply, deeply committed to matters of justice."

(2,500 posts)Sen. Murkowski didn't have to vote for AAG Gupta, but she did anyway. I wish the Senator would stop thinking about it and make the switch all ready. Doesn't have to be Democratic, Independent is fine, but she's out-growing the babies in the Republican party and it's time to move on.

(19,953 posts)Knew Gupta was going to be confirmed so this allowed her vote and claim bipartisanship. If manchin had voted no and she had voted yes, then that would be hugely different.

(840 posts)Independent would suit her better. She lost her primary but won the general with a write-in candidacy.
She should go independent.

(21,596 posts)Hopefully, President Biden can continue to use his decades of experience and his congressional relationships as a senator and as VP to advance Democratic legislation.
I hope that the administration speaks directly to all Alaskans, Democrats, Republicans and Independents, about how the administrations cabinet appointments and legislation will benefit Alaskans and all Americans.

(82,849 posts)Gupta is not a "controversial" appointment, and certainly not controversial by the standards of the former guy's administration. Gupta is qualified, competent, and understands the mission of the office. Compare and contrast with the likes of Ben Carson, Rick Perry, and others too numerous to remember here.
