You have to wonder if he treated everyone in the military equally. He is probably one of the Oath Keepers. Wonder if the military will do anything to him like strip him and others of their benefits after doing something like this?

(11,767 posts)Alcohol is an intoxicant, CNS depressant and one of the primary effects is disinhibition, meaning that the judgement center of your brain, the prefrontal cortex is impaired. This accounts for people who are intoxicated way over estimating their abilities to drive, dance, sing, etc... It is also the area of the brain that most of the time, prevents us from acting like idiots in social situations. Like when a little kid is standing next to mom or dad at the grocery store and says, "Mommy, why is that person so fat?" or something else that makes the parent cringe with embarrassment. That is the pre-frontal cortex (which is the last part of the brain to develop, and the first part to start to deteriorate in the normal aging process). We as adults may think, if only for a split second, "why is that person so overweight?" but we do not say it out loud because we have the learning and judgment to know, 1. None of my business. 2. It is hurtful and judgmental to say (and think) that. 3. It can start a fight. etc...
This guy is drunk, his pre-frontal cortex is not functioning in the way it typically does. He is frustrated at not getting more alcohol so he is responding in the way that is in his head, in the words that float around in his brain, but that he typically has the judgment not to express publicly.
I think that it is good to see these moments captured. I hope that this guy realizes he needs help, both with substance abuse, and to challenge the racism inside him.

(778 posts)Including the cerebellum, amylagada, hippocampus, Etc. Prefrontal cortex is generally Associated as having very little activity in those who are sociopaths. They are generally not racist because they just hate everyone. There is nothing that could excuse that jerk and I still think he should be stripped of all his benefits. Just my opinion though.

(11,767 posts)I think that it takes a lot more information to label someone, even a person acting like a jerk like this guy, a sociopath. That is a strong label to put on someone that we know little about. One of my relatives has Schizophrenia. When asymptomatic, they are the absolute sweetest person that would do anything to help anybody. When symptomatic, they can be scary, and I had the experience of hearing some of the most paranoid, racist, sexist rants coming out of this sweet person's mouth. Those ideas and concepts are floating around in people's brains. It doesn't make them sociopaths, it makes them part of American society. The point is that a lot of us, like a lot... have been brought up in a society that on the surface, celebrates diversity but in its fabric and institutions provides much opportunity for people to develop racist and bigoted ideas.
There was nothing mentioned in my post that was exculpatory. Explaining a process is not excusing it. He is responsible for managing his behaviors, including getting drunk and putting himself in that situation in the first place. If the consequences are that he loses his benefits and job, and status, then so be it. His behavior would likely justify those consequences. My hope is that he addresses the problems that lead him to this incident. If the guy can grow from this and change his behaviors and attitudes, then our society will get better. Punishing him for being a racist jerk would likely be gratifying for many of us who want people to have consequences, but the best outcome is that the consequences serve as a catalyst for real change. Punishment or consequences without the possibility for change is just cruelty.

(778 posts)I wasn't labeling the nasty racist in the video as a sociopath. I know nothing about him except that he is obviously an alcoholic just for the fact that he would let himself get so drunk. I was just saying the prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that has little activity in sociopaths. Ironically, I also know a few people who have schizophrenia. The hippocampus region appears to be the most affected part of the brain as far as schizophrenia is concerned, but I have also read the amygdala is also involved.
And of course you are right. It would probably only make matters worse if he was severely punished. It's just more fun to picture him having to suffer for his actions.

Sorry. Reading your post with all the parts of the brain reminded me of a scene from a movie.

(56,104 posts)I see this trotting out of children, spouses, and exes as "proof" the person in question isn't, hasn't done something, and/or said something racist, or homophobic, or sexist, or anti-Semitic, or and the list goes on. It makes them feel justified.
