Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsBill Maher New Rules tonight was amazing.
Hes been an idiot lately, but absolutely on point tonight about Biden and his age being a positive. Went off about how old people are wise and went off in ageism.
And he absolutely centered on how Biden is the right man for the job at the right time because of his age, its a strength and hes trying to become the most transformative President since FDR.
He misses the mark too often lately with his white grievance BS, but this was a masterpiece.

(23,531 posts)for being old. Bill was so rude to him being old and hard of hearing.
I guess he's grown up a bit. But, I'm thinking it's ONLY because he personally is feeling the agism.

(21,432 posts)that something must have made Maher feel his age lately because I've often thought that he tries to act younger than he is. Nothing wrong with older people feeling genuinely youthful, as long as it's not a forced effort to "fit in."

(47,399 posts)I really was totally fed up with him, especially after Biden was elected President and Maher kept throwing out sarcastic remarks about his age and competence. I don't know who in his mind he thought would have been a better choice, but obviously Biden was not his first, second, or third choice. Meanwhile, Biden was blowing everyone away with his progressive and well thought out agenda. I kept watching Maher's show so I could see the point where he finally acknowledged what we all were seeing.
Last night, he finally did it! I smiled during the whole segment about Biden and age, frequently talking to the television.

(25,472 posts)your ideas are stupid." Experience as resource, accumulated knowledge, not assumption that "fresh faces" or "new blood" are somehow always better.
Great show!

Well, unless they are young Republicans, Proud Boys, etc. I do think Bidens wisdom is essential right now.
Still a Maher fan.

(64,999 posts)I had people much younger than me as direct reports. I always wanted their ideas.
Admittedly, I was in a field where some things are simply not a matter of opinion.
The chemistry doesn't change because we'd like it to.
But, young people selling change to other young people.
Why wouldn't I listen?

(3,803 posts)I've been watching less and less of him -- I basically start skipping ahead when he starts whining -- stop and check -- skip some more -- repeat. It took me 8 minutes to watch all of last week's show.
I'll be sure to catch tonight's episode.

(54,358 posts)One of the best observations ever. Before Covid-19, I was always dumbstruck at the hoards of tourists in the streets of cities like Paris and Barcelona who weren't gazing at their surroundings, but into their iPhones for the right moment to take a picture of their surroundings. I felt like screaming, "if that's all you're going to do here, buy a book from National Geographic and stay home!"

(8,445 posts)If nobody I know is going to be in the photo, I'm not taking the shot. As you said, buy a book. Those professionals who took the photos in the books take way better photos than I can take, especially with my phone.

(32,080 posts)Back when they weren't limiting fans, I would see people in the front rows at sporting events staring into their damn phones, instead of watching the game. You pay hundreds of dollars for a seat on the glass at a hockey game, but you watch your phone instead? I don't get it.

(407 posts)Only it's the opposite way around - I look bizarrely young.
People always tell me it's a great thing and I should just enjoy it, but..
I think there's some sort of law that bans that kind of discrimination here now, but twenty years ago I was denied the chance to pursue the career I went to school for. More than once after nailing interviews I was told right to my face they were going with the other candidate simply because I looked too young.
I'm glad people are actually recognizing that it is a problem. I still have difficulty sometimes getting people to take me seriously. And then they realize I'm more than ten to twenty years older than them.
Rorey
(8,445 posts)I used to have that problem too.
There were times I was treated with disrespect because it was assumed I was way younger than I was. I remember a time I had to go talk to authorities at my oldest son's school. He was probably 15 at the time. I thought the person we were in a meeting with was incredibly rude. She finally asked, "Who are you?" I replied, "I'm his mother!" She replied that she thought I was my son's sister. It didn't excuse the way she acted.
Another time I was at work. The owner of the company, who I had never seen before because he lived in another state, popped in one day. He was speaking to me in a somewhat condescending tone. Later we were talking about something or other, and the topic of my kids came up. He said, "You have kids? How old are you???" I was in my late 30s at the time.
I hope that in both of these instances the rude people realized that it's never good to make assumptions about someone, and, more importantly, everyone should be treated with respect.
Now I feel that I look much closer to my age, but I do have great skin, thanks to a lifetime of sun-shunning and genetics. My daughters-in-law tell me every once in awhile that I look way younger than I am. I really don't believe that anymore, but I also am really not very concerned. I'm more comfortable about myself than I've ever been in my life.

(1,910 posts)The only truth is that Biden's unique experience and age made him the right person at the right time. But the rest was drivel. Old guys run every Fortune 500 company, every company board is all old people, the Senate is mostly all old people, all sports teams are mostly owned by old people, and on and on. The old pretty much hold all the power.
The stupid bashing young people using cell phones or watching video games is the same 'get off my lawn' nonsense. Every single generation had a version of it.....no one walks anymore when cars came out, no one washes clothes by hand, that Rolling Stones music is bad, etc. And the stuff about 33% want no police....what percentage of older liberals feel the same so we can compare??
Guess will just disagree on this, besides the fact Biden was the perfect person for the Presidency at this time, the rest made no sense at all.

(35,437 posts)Several cities across the South Asian nation have reported shocking details of bodies, wrapped in protective gear and identified by hospitals as virus-related deaths, lined up outside crematoriums for hours. Accounts collated by Bloomberg from relatives of the dead and workers and eyewitnesses at crematoriums in at least five cities indicate that the real number of Covid fatalities could be significantly higher than the deaths being reported by local government health departments.

(41,959 posts)He's a total asshole about many things but fat shaming (yeah, I'm in the category in spite of lifelong attempts to starve and a medical condition that makes it very VERY difficult) has pretty much ended my tenuous love affair with Maher. But I like Fran Leibowitz and April Ryan so I watched. It was a smart choice on his part. And he'd have to do more than I think he's capable of to make me do more than barely tolerate him again.
