New York congresswoman says at virtual town hall ‘I think a lot of us expected a much more conservative administration’

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saluted the Biden administration on Friday, saying the new president had exceeded progressives’ expectations in his first 100 days in the White House.

“The Biden administration and President Biden have definitely exceeded expectations that progressives had,” the New York congresswoman, a star on the left of the Democratic party, told a virtual town hall meeting. “I think a lot of us expected a much more conservative administration.”

In March, Joe Biden scored a major victory when his $1.9tn Covid stimulus and rescue package passed into law without a single Republican vote.

Progressives were disappointed, though, when a move to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour was dropped from the package after a ruling by the Senate parliamentarian.

1. I agree with AOC. I'm deliriously happy with President Biden.

I feared he would be much too conservative and pragmatic. I'm thrilled with his toughness, and his clear and obvious empathy for the American people who have struggled since Reagan. He knows the history, and he gets it.

He's our new FDR. Maybe better! And this is clearly an historic Presidency.

3. Someone should drive this point to the "progressives".

Perhaps the issue is not Biden exceeding expectations, but the many years of "progressive" narrative peddling preposterously low expectations of Biden.

4. Closer to the truth

It's not hard to exceed expectations when they were so low to begin with. It's only the first 100 days though, there's still plenty of time for Biden to disappoint them. With just about all political constituencies, there's always a fair amount of "what have you done LATELY?".
