As pandemic surges anew, global envy and anger over U.S. vaccine abundance

As India announced grim records — the highest daily coronavirus infection tallies in a single country — Americans were enjoying a spring of vaccine abundance.

In India, just 1.4 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated, and overwhelmed hospitals have been running short of oxygen. Meanwhile, in the United States — where 1 in 4 Americans are fully vaccinated and more than 40 percent have gotten at least the first dose — a major Miami hospital, Jackson Memorial, said it would begin winding down vaccinations because of excess supply and weakening demand.

In Michigan, health workers are rolling out shots to high school students. In North Carolina, doses sat on shelves earlier this month during a pause for spring break.

A long-simmering debate over the glaring gap in vaccine access — largely between rich and poor countries, but among some developed nations, too — is now boiling over, with global figures and national leaders decrying the vaccine plenty in a few nations and the relative drought almost everywhere else.

Jonas Salk never patented the polio vaccine though some say he should have.

Period!

Republicans would still be letting average Americans die at record levels, i.e. we'd be what India is today.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, democratic voters for voting like your lives depended upon it and especially to all those who voted out of compassion for their fellow human being!!!

The vaccine was his main reason for visiting and he said that Europe's distribution of it is completely screwed up, even in countries that have much better health care than we do.

The man who runs my Swiss office has been vaccinated because he is 74, but younger Swiss citizens are still waiting. When we left Germany for the USA 2 weeks ago, the newspaper headlines were bragging that now people UNDER 80 could also get vaccinated. Now "even" 79 year olds could get vaccinated--assuming their health departments called them and gave them appointments, that is.

As a contrast, 2 days before my wife and I flew from Germany to Dallas, my office there asked for, and received, appointments for us after we arrived in the USA. We got appointments in downtown Dallas for 2 days after we arrived, and got appointments for May 10 (the day we wanted) for the second shot. No sweat. We won't be flying back to Germany until the 15th, to give time for any side effects from the second shot to wear off. We know there could be anywhere from severe reactions to none at all, but we are playing it safe, so as not to take a ten hour flight during which we could be hit with chills, fever, nausea or fatigue.
