Popular and controversial Fox News host Tucker Carlson criticized American colleges and the mainstream media, saying "everyone should opt out" of higher education and that he "really" hates journalists today.
Carlson's remarks came in an wide-ranging interview with OutKick, a largely sports-focused media company, published on Friday. The Fox News host is one of the network's most highly rated personalities, regularly drawing in millions of viewers.
In the interview, Carlson railed against the higher education system in the country, explaining that he urged all four of his children not to attend collegebut they did anyway.
"There is this idea that college improves your worth. Where is the evidence of that? I'm sure that hard sciences do. If you're an engineer or you are in medical school, you would learn discrete information, actual facts that you can use and that you need to know in order to join the profession that you want to join. But for kids like me who go in for liberal arts education, I believe it diminishes you," Carlson told the site.
...
The Fox News host explained that he "pushed" his children not to attend college, but said they all disregarded his advice. "I told them, 'I'll take the money we're gonna spend in collegewe were blessed to have, we saved money for themand figure out something more interesting to do with this.' But, to my shame, all of them went."

(22,354 posts)It is means to teach logical thinking, to critically analyze arguments, and to give a breadth of knowledge about humanity and the universe.
It is intended to create a thoughtful citizen, who can analyze alternatives, determine how facts support (or don't support) various theories, and to look at one's life and society from the perspective of global history.
In short, it should teach how not to become Tucker Carlson.

(2,636 posts)Tucker Carlson is a trust fund baby, so no a degree won't lift him financially.
However, for regular middle class folks and working class peolpe, the ticket to continued middle class lies in education--teachers, banker, nurses, accountants, tech support.
College educated workers start with higher salaries and earn raises faster. Over a lifetime, there's a million dollars worth of difference.
Guessing Tucker's kids don't want to get my on their family name and want to do something worthwhile.

(2,494 posts)We'll find out in the future what a horrible father he is. College is also a way for kids to avoid having to be dependent financially to their parents. Especially racist assholes who threaten to cut off their money if they don't conform to his fucked up ideas.

(57,393 posts)I gather that some DUers are under the impression that the Newsweek of 2021 is the same Newsweek that existed back in 1961, when the Washington Post bought it. For a while, Benjamin Bradlee was, at some point, Washington Bureau chief for Newsweek.
Those days are long gone. The last time Newsweek went on the market, it fetched a whopping one dollar:
It might have been overpriced.
It is today clickbait crap. I am among a few at DU who argue it should not be thought of as a reliable news source.
I half expect Newsweek to run a picture of Tucker Carlson shaking hands with a space alien.
When I see Newsweek used as a source at DU, I automatically know the story is nonsense. If Newsweek said the sky was blue, I'd go outside to check. If they said that my mom loved me, I'd go looking for a second source to confirm that before I believed it.
Best wishes.

(8,853 posts)I had no idea. Well, at least they didn't listen to him regarding college so maybe they don't listen to him regarding other matters.
On edit: What the hell am I thinking. He's probably lying. I'm sure that he is the type who would pull as many strings as he could to get his kids into the best college possible whether they were qualified or not. He just wants the idiots who listen to him to remain idiots and keep their kids in a state of idiocy as well.

(4,446 posts)First, he's a damn liar. As dim as he is, he knows that on average, people with college degrees earn significantly more than those who don't have them. So I very seriously doubt he ever discouraged his kids from going to college. In fact, I'm sure he'd love it if more people didn't attend college so that his kids would have a leg up.
Second, he didn't save for his kids to go to college. He came from a hell of a lot of money. He's just trying to be an "everyman."
Third, he actually went to a decent college. I've got a relative going there right now. There's no doubt that relative will have his worth improved.
What a goddamn turd. Doing his utmost to get his listeners to deny their kids the opportunities that his had.

(4,394 posts)and agrees with him, Tucker's net worth is $30 million dollars. So when he's telling his kids they don't need college it doesn't mean what the ignorant twits who watch him think it means.
I'll agree with Tucker that kids don't need to go to college when he pledges to give $7.5 million dollars to any kid who takes him up on the deal. Otherwise he can sink straight back into the swamp he crawled out of.

(11,949 posts)From the second they were born.
Its obvious that his and republicans rhetoric is now aimed at the non-college among us. Because Im a science major. You think the University of Kentucky let me out with a BS only studying my science field? Hell no.
My first 2 years I spent less time away from my collage as I did in the liberal arts colleges. I was given a well rounded education. With a speciality in my field. And frankly, I have used what I learned in those departments more than what I learned in my field of study. Not every one does. But those classes helped my skills tremendously.
