I'll be 62 in July (able to get a lifetime National Park Service pass). I'm finishing up my last major management project and expect to file for retirement in June. I have a defined benefit plan that pays 2/3 of my current salary and lifetime health care my me and my wife.

(8,000 posts)Retirement is way better than advertised. You can get unemployment if you retire? That's awesome.

(36,290 posts)I'm 62 and early retirement came for me getting close to 10 years now when I qualified for SSDI. It's a lot less money then what I made when able to work full time but I've adjusted and I get excellent health care, and will for the resto f my days, from the VA.

(32,610 posts)I was able to get a lifetime pass to the National Parks just before Chump discontinued them. It's so unfortunate that he did that, because now people have to buy the pass every year and the price is doubled.
But your other retirement benefits sound great too. Congratulations!

(32,610 posts)I got it when they were about to discontinue the lifetime passes altogether.
It was about 3 years ago when Ryan Zinke was the Secretary of the Interior. Remember him? Very corrupt man who got fired, just like most of Chump's appointees. Anyway Zinke wanted to lease or sell federal lands including some of the National Park properties, and Chump was all in favor of that. He's the one who discontinued the Lifetime Senior Pass. I guess they brought it back and quadrupled the price.
Joe Biden should look into this!

(759 posts)Between covid and burnout decided its time to hop off the rat race. Fortunately hubby is willing and really wants to work full time, health care is now covered. I requested quotes from a local insurance broker, basically $12k/year with a $11k/year max out of pocket. My husband and I both take AIDS meds, we scoot right up to max out of pocket within 2-3 months every year. I am one of the fortunate few that can possibly afford this assuming we eat dog food from this point forward. Republicans would rather my husband and I die.

(36,009 posts)Having a defined benefit plan makes for a fine retirement. I had similar terms but by IL law couldn't Social Security benefits, just Medicare.
That the park pass is one of the best benefits of this beautiful country.

(11,562 posts)I can't imagine what you'd need a briefing for, though. "Here - have a great retirement package. Enjoy it!" Is that about it?
A friend of mine used to work for the Australian fed. gov, and they offered him a golden handshake. Because I was retired, and have been since the late 80s, he thought I'd be a good person to ask. This was the late 90s. They offered him $110,000 cash-on-the-dash, full benefits for life, and $60K a year. I told him to sign it before they come to their senses. He said he wanted to talk with his financial adviser.
The adviser told him the same thing.
