Troy Carter wins Louisiana special election in blow to progressives

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/04/24/troy-carter-wins-louisiana-special-election-in-blow-to-progressives-484576

Carter, a Democratic state senator, overcame a candidate endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and backed by national liberal groups.

Progressives suffered a disappointing setback on Saturday, after their favored candidate lost to a more establishment-aligned opponent in a special congressional election in Louisiana.

State Sen. Troy Carter, who was backed by top leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus, beat state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson in a runoff to fill a vacant House seat that quickly turned into a turf war for sparring factions of the Democratic Party. He overcame more than a million dollars in outside spending backing Peterson to win, 56 percent to 44 percent, when The Associated Press called the race.

The district is majority Black and safe Democratic territory; it includes almost all of New Orleans and stretches north toward Baton Rouge. The former incumbent, Cedric Richmond, vacated the seat to join the Biden administration.

In one of his final acts as a member of Congress, Richmond backed Carter, who also nabbed endorsements from House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.). Peterson was backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), former Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams, EMILY’s List and activist Gary Chambers Jr., who came in third place in the March primary.

We badly need people on both sides to work together.

Peterson's attempt to differentiate by making herself seem more of a Prog and get that support. With a 21-year mainstream progressive Dem record in the state legislature to look at, it's believed she'd have aligned with our mainstream progressive caucus if she'd gone to congress, as Carter apparently will.

We don't know what promises she might have made to get the big-money Prog support, though. Whatever, local constituents made their choice.

Peterson's campaign took a Greater New Orleans Republicans PAC flyer and created a fake one, claiming that the GNOR PAC was endorsing Carter. The truth is that they did NOT endorse Carter. In fact they didn't participate in the runoff campaign at all - the PAC is no longer active at all! This is pretty dirty:

Somedays I get three emails in one day all asking for money to fight evil corporate/regular democrats. I find these appeals to be both moronic and amusing. I am not a fan of this group which appears to have zero GOP seats flipped.

Somehow I think the "progressives" were braced for defeat. He got 27% more votes than her, & they all get polling data.
I'm guessing this wasn't the devastating disappointment the headline suggests.
