Apparently it was the same predicament depicted in Das Boot except that the sub was crushed before it hit bottom.

Indonesian Navy Says Missing Submarine Sunk, Crew Of 53 Dead

Navy officials do not believe the submarine exploded, but say it likely cracked under immense pressure from the depth it was at. The vessel was built with a maximum operating depth of 200 to 250 meters...

When I did a lot of transatlantic travel back in my younger days, I usually chose Lufthansa. I know there's some joke out there about the English, Germans, French, etc. Reflecting their strengths and weaknesses by stereotype.

That all being said, I hope it all occurred too fast for those men to know what was going to happen.

So much of the movie is tight closeups. Just doesn't work with English dubbing coming from their mouths. Distracting as hell and just ruins the atmosphere. One of my favorite movies all time.

my mind somehow switched over to the German. I can speak a little and understand more, but that movie is so immersive (so to speak) that I can only see it as the original.

Either it cracked and took on too much water or had a fire or runaway torpedo or had issues that kept them from rising back up and slowly sank to crush depth.
Frankly a 40 yo sub is just too old, esp in a 3rd world navy.

A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind." It is said to resemble an octopus, a dragon and a human caricature, hundreds of meters tall, with webbed human-looking arms and legs and a pair of rudimentary wings on its back. Its head is depicted as similar to the entirety of a gigantic octopus, with an unknown number of tentacles surrounding its supposed mouth.

Although possibly gruesome as the rapidly compressed air as the water rushes in means anything flammable would burst into flames until the water slams into the area and snuffs it out again. The impact of the water would cause significant injury to anyone unlucky enough to still be alive.
