A Vandergrift police officer was removed from the work schedule Monday while the borough investigates his conduct during a police call over the weekend, Mayor Barb Turiak said.

Officer William Moore, who has worked for the department for more than 20 years, is being paid while off the schedule. Once the internal investigation is complete, council members will decide whether Moore returns to duty.

“It’s an ongoing investigation, and I can’t comment further,” Turiak said.

Moore declined to comment about the incident.

Vandergrift police Chief Joe Caporali said Moore responded to a Westmoreland County 911 call just before 8 a.m. Saturday reporting that a Black male was smoking marijuana outside G&G Restaurant on Columbia Avenue. The chief did not say who placed the 911 call.

When Moore arrived, he initiated a conversation inside the restaurant with Marcus Townsend, 20, of Vandergrift, Caporali said. Townsend, who is Black, could not be reached for comment Monday.

Townsend recorded video of the encounter and posted several clips on social media after the incident. He can be heard asking why he was being questioned and then asked to leave the restaurant by the officer.

In an exchange outside the restaurant, Townsend said in one video, “You came straight to the Black dude sitting at the table.”

Racial profiling is not going to stop until the white privileged masses stop it.

8. Hate to say it but that has a slim chance of happening in parts of Westmoreland Co PA.

One of the reddest areas of the state. They luv the former Guy there.

I went to a John Kerry rally there in 2004 - it was kind of scary even back then.

6. Man responds with calm integrity after being racially profiled.

I want to hear the 911 call. Also, smoking weed is not 911-worthy, so whoever made the call is also responsible for wasting police time and money. I also don't see any engagement with staff to see if this is the person who was allegedly smoking weed in the cafe.

Anyway, kudos to this guy for keeping calm in the face of blatant profiling and recording the interactions. I'm willing to give the officer the benefit of the doubt that he's not drunk (some people have speech impediments), but he gets no pass on being a racist POS.

11. I wanna know why isn't he wearing a mask???????????

The cops here in my South Hills borough refuse to wear them too. Never have and never will.

And they get extremely belligerent if you ask them about it.

12. Beyond the profiling, imagine calling the police because someone is smoking marijuana.

That should be a call that the police don't even respond to.
