JUST IN: The Supreme Court announced Monday it will consider the scope of the Second Amendment next term, in a case concerning a New York law that restricts an individual from carrying a concealed handgun in public.

Replying to @JacobCharlesNC
The case - NYSRPA v. Corlett - concerns the constitutionality of New York's concealed-carry law that requires a person to show "proper cause" to obtain a carry license & therefore limits CCLs to those w/ a specific & articulable need for protection that is not speculative.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 9th Circuits have upheld the type of "good cause" laws the Supreme Court will review. The DC Circuit is the only court of appeals to strike one down.

Along with New York, 6 other states require this heightened showing of good cause or justifiable need: CA, DE, HI, MD, MA, & NJ. The framework of all those laws will hinge on the outcome of this case.

According to my back-of-the-napkin calculation (with 2019 Census population estimates), these type of laws govern about 83 million people, or about 1 in every 4 Americans.

We had fewer school shootings during the pandemic. Another post indicates there were some 15 people shot in NYC this weekend, compared to maybe 2 a year ago?

Guns are the problem. Easy access to guns is the problem. Bully culture and might makes right is the problem. I'm tired of hearing about guns, seeing guns in supermarkets and drug stores, seeing emphasis on 2nd amendments protections while the GOP eviscerates the first, 4th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 19th, and 26th.

The Second Amendment does not convey an individual right to keep guns for self defense or to ward off tyranny. It's just not in there. We've allowed militia to go from an organized, regularly drilled and trained on call group of citizen-soldiers to unregulated fat, middle aged, angry white guys in camo and tactical gear training themselves in the woods to attack protestors or the government.

sigh.

climbs off soapbox and pours another cup of coffee.
