1. "He's got a gun to his head." So the moron fixes that by unloading an entire clip into the guy.

What the hell is wrong with all these idiotic cops? I think people need to start recognizing the fact that some people pursue a law enforcement career because they've failed at everything else. I personally know a couple of people who did this. Although there are many great cops, we have a lot who either have a power/control complex and many who aren't the sharpest tool in the shed.

legs or shoulders or any place that wouldn't be fatal if they feel they have to disarm someone? And when did shoot first, ask questions later take priority?

These guys aren’t trick shooters, they’re taught to aim center mass. Why not ask why they don’t just shoot the gun out of the person’s hand like Clint Eastwood? It’s unrealistic. If you have to use deadly force you want it to be deadly. Shooting a guy aiming a gun at you in the leg doesn’t prevent him from shooting back. Shooting him in the chest most likely will.

Are police sometimes too quick to go to the gun? Absolutely. But it’s not standard practice. Out of thousands of calls per day, it’s statistically rare that anyone gets shot and even more rare that someone gets shot needlessly. Over the past week or so, there have been several incidents, some were clearly justified and some that were clearly questionable at best, criminal at worst.

It’s a mixed bag for sure. And it would help if we took these on a case by case basis.

8. A taser isn't for use against a gun.

You tase people who are out of control, you don’t tase people who pull a gun on you. It’s the modern equivalent of bringing a knife to a gun fight.

10. Tasers have extremely high failure to deploy rates, approaching 50%.

Tasers fire 2 prongs, and both prongs have to seat properly in order for the weapon to be effective. Tasers are primarily used against mostly stationary targets. In addition to movement, clothing, body angle, purses, bags, basically anything can interfere with the proper deployment of a taser. And an improperly deployed taser is useless.

People like to think it's like a 'stun' setting on a phaser from Star Trek, and that's not even remotely the case.

That's not to say this cop was right to shoot that guy in that situation. But Tasers are not a magical device that can eliminate police officers from carrying firearms.

if we put our minds to it, but killing people (especially black/brown people) is more effective at maintaining the racial and class order.

Bean bag rounds are one of them. Rubber bullets another. All of them have drawbacks and can still kill in some circumstances.

A black person or other person of color is shot dead. Maybe the training isn’t right. Maybe not every damned cop needs to have a gun.

12. Most cops barely shoot their guns for practice

Ammo is expensive, and most police only have to qualify once a year on the range. And by "qualify", I mean get most of their bullets on a man-sized target.

To get our police force to that level of precision would require higher-quality guns and ammo (most aren't that accurate from the factory) and MUCH more training, similar to what we give Special Forces soldiers.
