Misinformation about coronavirus vaccines continues to impact public policy -- even at schools.
"A private school in the fashionable Design District of Miami sent its faculty and staff a letter last week about getting vaccinated against Covid-19. But unlike institutions that have encouraged and even facilitated vaccination for teachers, the school, Centner Academy, did the opposite: One of its co-founders, Leila Centner, informed employees 'with a very heavy heart' that if they chose to get a shot, they would have to stay away from students," The New York Times reported Monday.
"In an example of how misinformation threatens the nation's effort to vaccinate enough Americans to get the coronavirus under control, Ms. Centner, who has frequently shared anti-vaccine posts on Facebook, claimed in the letter that 'reports have surfaced recently of non-vaccinated people being negatively impacted by interacting with people who have been vaccinated. Even among our own population, we have at least three women with menstrual cycles impacted after having spent time with a vaccinated person,' she wrote, repeating a false claim that vaccinated people can somehow pass the vaccine to others and thereby affect their reproductive systems. (They can do neither.)" the newspaper fact-checked.

(17,578 posts)you do realize that many (can't give a % for you) people teaching in 'private' or 'parochial' schools are there because they cannot get a position in a public school system, right?
Yes, there ARE dedicated people that opt to support and live their beliefs in the private sector, but the truth is that many are there because they couldn't get a position in a state-sponsored public school system.
The scary part of their job is that they are subject to the whims of the 'owners/administrators' that control the private system. They do not have the protection of a public servant and, as we see here in this example, are at the mercy of any crazy loon that 'calls the plays' in a private system.
There is a glut regarding the number of teachers wanting jobs. It is a seller's market - they can get away with whatever they want.
With our new First Lady I'm hoping that at some point down the line there will be some attention directed to the 'teacher employment' issue.
OilemFirchen
(7,288 posts)Is it because they're unqualified?
MyOwnPeace
(17,578 posts)There are more qualified candidates than positions.
Simple math - too many qualified candidates - not enough positions.
Population shifts - districts down-sizing or being forced to cut staff to meet budget requirements.
At one time there was a 'joke' that WalMart had the most educated employees than any corporation in the country - teachers working there while looking for jobs.
The 'glut' of teachers has forced some universities to shut down their "Schools of Education" because they were sending so many graduates into a market that has no need. Because of the supply/demand issue, there were fewer applicants for the education schools to fill their student rosters.
All of this has a long-term negative effect. Not enough jobs - no reason to apply. Not enough candidates - impossible to fill staff requirements.
There is already a serious shortage of substitute teachers - people that were doing THAT job with the hope of getting a full-time job in the future.
Yet another 'problem' that Joe is gonna' have to deal with - how to get the American education system in a position to be recognized as a serious means of ( brace yourself for this!) Making America Great Again!!!!
OilemFirchen
(7,288 posts)there would be ample need for public school teachers. Thus, my original observation.
MyOwnPeace
(17,578 posts)there is NO legal right to shut down private/religious schools. That is a freedom that the Constitution provides. However, we (the public taxpayers) should NOT have to fund them.
The 'government' provides public education. If you elect to opt out - you're on your own.
It would probably be more efficient if they chose not to, but, they do have the right to do so - but it should NOT come at the "public" (the 'system' provided by the government) expense.
CLIFF NOTES:
You don't wanna' go to our schools?
FINE!
You're on your own!
Regarding teachers: Like any other profession, there can be a shortage and there can be too many. That's how the market works.
Where teachers rate is, unfortunately, based on budget issues, and the priority for teachers is usually too low. Schools usually are the first to get 'cut' when money gets tight and last when there is a surplus.
But, nowhere in any of this issue is there a place for 'government' providing for private or parochial schools.
They should be an independent and separate sector with no government money/support.

(11,767 posts)Private schools need to follow all state and federal guidelines OR they should shut down. They can do their special curriculum, but when it comes to labor law and public health, there should be NO leeway at all with private schools. You follow the guidelines for vaccination or you shut down.
I want to Catholic School from 2nd to 12th grade and thank goodness the staff was based in science and public health and not any fundamentalism or woo.
That woman is an idiot and has no business being around children or involved in any way in their education.

My experience was very much like that which you describe.
The polio vaccines were given out AT SCHOOL.
Priests used holy water for ceremony. They didn't pretend it cured any illness or injury.
6th grade science teacher was a nun! We learned about science!
The small catholic school by our house is the vaccination site for the southern edge of the county.
Seems we experienced the opposite of what this nutjob is selling.

(94,410 posts)Meet Miami's Most Philanthropic Power Couple, David and Leila Centner
Riki Altman-Yee | July 18, 2019 | People
David and Leila Centner moved to Miami determined to make a change in the lives of women, children and teachers.

Long before they had their children and sold their Highway Toll Administration company for an undisclosed amount, David and Leila Centner were dedicated to charities that helped women and children in Ethiopia, Nicaragua and Harlem, an hour away from their previous home. Were drawn to causes that break the cycle of poverty, says Leila.
Yet, since 2017, when they decided to set roots in Miami (where David was born and raised), the bulk of their generosity has remained in our community. When we moved here, one of our first orders of business was to find people in need and find a way to resourcefully contribute, says David. After we sold our company, we set aside an eight-figure sum strictly for donations. We invested that money and our goal is to donate 75 percent of the annual earnings.
The two also devote their time to nonprofits like the Lotus House shelter, where they recently opened the David and Leila Centner Culinary Center, which features a state-of-the-art kitchen and teaching program. This August, they will launch Centner Academy (centneracademy.com), a private, progressive language-immersion school in the Design District, where the curriculum (delivered in Mandarin for half of each day) has been developed to teach kids to think creatively and become problem solvers. The core of our foundation is all about the happy child, mindfulness and helping shape conscious and connected little beings, Leila explains.
In addition to regular donations to the Arsht Center, JAFCO and Hebrew Academy, the Centners recently contributed $40 million in seed capital toward a real estate development in Edgewater designed to create affordable housing for teachers. Our passion is to be the best we can be, says David, and contribute to humanity in big and small ways.

(34,189 posts)So here is a Reuters article with detail on why these claims cannot be true:
By Reuters Fact Check April 23, 2021
False claims that the coronavirus vaccines can be passed or shed from an immunized person to an unvaccinated woman and then somehow affect the womans reproductive system are whipping around social media. Top medical experts agree that it is impossible for a person to transmit the vaccines to people they happen to be near and for a woman to experience miscarriage, menstrual cycle changes, and other reproductive problems by being around a vaccinated person.
This is a conspiracy that has been created to weaken trust in a series of vaccines that have been demonstrated in clinical trials to be safe and effective, said Dr Christopher Zahn, Vice President for Practice Activities at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the leading U.S. organization for medical professionals in womens healthcare.
Calling the vaccines our single best tool for confronting a global pandemic that has taken 600,000 lives in this country alone, Zahn added in a statement emailed to Reuters that such conspiracies and false narratives are dangerous and have nothing to do with science.
{SNIP}
VERDICT
False. It is impossible to shed the coronavirus vaccine. Being around vaccinated people cannot hurt a womans reproductive system.
