By the time President Bidens aides gathered for their morning meeting on Monday, the juicy whopper of a mistruth making its way around the conservative ecosphere that Bidens climate plan would significantly limit Americas hamburger consumption had officially entered mainstream public discourse.
Bidens team looked for an opportunity to quickly debunk the falsehood. White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain retweeted a CNN fact check titled, No, Biden is not trying to force Americans to eat less red meat, while several press aides tweeted a photo of a grinning Biden flipping burgers at a 2019 Iowa steak fry, along with the caption, White House to the fact-challenged: wheres the beef?
To White House aides, the wholly fictional Biden-will-ban-hamburgers story line was in part an amusing flare-up perpetuated by Republicans who have struggled to find ways to successfully attack the president. They joked privately that White House press secretary Jen Psaki should start her daily press briefing by eating a burger.
But the not-quite-red-meat attack also offers a case study in how a falsehood can rapidly metastasize among Republicans pushed not only by the partys fringe but also by more mainstream voices, like former South Carolina governor and potential 2024 hopeful Nikki Haley. The argument dovetails with a common claim on the right that Democrats are out to ban meat-eating, whether for reasons of health or climate.

(33,643 posts)After I die, in no small part because of all the meat I've eaten in my life I'm sure ... I really hope everyone else stops!
It's terrible for the environment, and cows and pigs are nice.
I don't care about your health, cause people are even worse for the environment than eating meat.

Hooved animals kept in large herds for human consumption devastate an already fragile topsoil. Growing protein laden peas, beans, pulses improved the soil. Go figure.

(6,905 posts)Eating less red meat, more fruits and vegetables is no secret. Apparently, though, its new to Republicans.
Of course, they also denied health risks from smoking cigarettes.

(589 posts)for 30 years has allowed me to have a level of health that my Dad never had beyond his 20's (he dying of heart issues at 67 a month after a multiple valve replacement after years of eating mostly meat and potatoes and corn syrup). But as fervent as I am about not eating meat in my own life, it's not my place to cajole/push/force people to give up their colon-killing ways...even those I live with.
