Federal agents on Sunday arrested a 62-year-old Hillsboro man in connection with the Jan. 6 takeover of the U.S. Capitol.
Reed Knox Christensen is accused of assaulting a federal law enforcement officer during the Capitol siege, federal prosecutor Paul Maloney told a magistrate judge.
An FBI video on the U.S. Department of Justice website shows him pushing past a barrier in front of the Capitol and grappling with several officers, according to a federal complaint.
Christensen made his first appearance Monday in federal court in Portland, becoming the third person arrested in Oregon tied by federal prosecutors to the insurrection in Washington, D.C. Another man was arrested in Vancouver last month.

(10,749 posts)What I'm waiting for is for the pleas to begin and people start going to jail.
And trial being held and these terrorists being convicted and going to jail.
And, related to a press release from DHS yesterday, I want to see white supremacists and domestic terrorists within the USG rooted out and, ideally, indicted for any number of crimes and then tried and convicted. Though I am cynical that this will happen. If these domestic terrorists are domestic terrorists off the clock, then their vile beliefs and behavior will only count if they're caught. And you know that they are going to claim infringement of constitutional rights to combat efforts to toss their asses to the curb.

(32,633 posts)Whether they go to prison or not ... well it's not for us to say. Some of these guys can afford good lawyers. If they're senior citizens with a "clean" record, they'll probably get probation.

They did it to themselves.
I think once the first Regular Joe gets sentenced to ten years in prison, there will be a rush to change their pleas. I see a lot of prison sentences of 20 years, with time off for good behavior, they may serve 5-12.
Prison has a way of sobering one up.
Screw the lot of them.

(78 posts)-- Biden DOJ under Garland is prosecuting to fullest extent
-- 400 arrested already
-- Figliuzzi sources indicate 500+ to be charged
-- Many charged with conspiracy (20 years)
Per the previous poster, there will be very few trials. Vast majority will plead guilty. And looking at such long sentences, most will be doing multiple years.
97% of federal cases and 94% of state cases end via plea bargain.

The U.S. criminal code defines sedition as part of a broad category that includes treason. The actual crime is called seditious conspiracy. This involves usingor planning to usephysical force against the U.S. government, as well as efforts to seize, take, or possess government property, or delay the execution of any law of the United States by force. The punishment can be up to 20 years in prison.

(11,563 posts)hoping for that one juror who agrees and won't vote for a conviction no matter what. What are the odds that, in the 12 people randomly selected for jury duty, at least one isn't an insurrectionist at heart?

(11,563 posts)Jury trials are a Constitutional right, as I'm sure you know. I also think it's a viable defence strategy, from their POV. Hate it, but there it is.

Choosing to go to trial
AND
Getting a hung jury
Are quite remote
D.C. voted for Biden over Trump
Percentage 92.15% to 5.40%
So at a 3% chance of going to trial
AND
A 5% chance of an acquittal juror
That puts the odds at about 1 in 660
And with ~500 being charged, one or two might beat the odds, but even they could be retried.
So, yeah, thankfully they're all fabulously f#cked, all 500 of 'em.

I so hate the death penalty, but I find myself very much in agreement that treason is the one thing that deserves it. A murderer is dangerous to a small part of the whole; a traitor is dangerous to everyone and everything.
